HARRISBURG TELEGRAPH LOSS OF AME TO BE CONSIDERED "UNFRIENDLY A Washing! on, July 21.—The United States has reclded to inform Germany that further loss of American lives as the result of German submarine war fare in contravention of the principles of International law, will be regarded as an "unfriendly act." The discus sion of principles is virtually ended. The American government will now warn Germany of the interpretation < it will place on future transgressions of American rights. i In the new note the United States i assumes that Germany already has ad- ; mltted the principle that passengers must be removed to a place of safety < before destroying an unreissting met- 1 chantman as a prize. Taking the position therefore, that ■ the two governments are agreed in I principle the United States views it ! ~ I MAKING THE ENEMY FURNISH I J BULLETS e When the British were endeavoring _ to subdue the Maoris they were long - the victims of a ruse that enabled the natives to replenish their stock of bul h lets at the expense of their enemies. _ The Maoris would build a dummy and expose It from behind a tree near the h British lines. Immediately the Brit ), ish would blaze away at it. Behind •• the dummy the Maoris would have m constructed an earth bank and from C this they would later dig their sup j ply of bullets to send back to the 8 British.—The American Boy. y FOK SALE: J FOR SALE A drop-head Singer t sewing machine and a buffet. PORTABLE TALKING MACHINES CONVENIENT FOR CAMPERS Because of its unusual compactness and lightness, a new phonograph which has recently been developed is particularly adapted for use in a canoe or motorboat. Its construction is novel, for the horn forms a part of the body and thus greatly reduces Its size. The instrument weighs only 6 lbs. ahd fits into a case which may easily he car ried on a camping trip or stored in a locker at a canoe house where it is accessible for use whenever wanted on the water. It plays disk records and is very inexpensive.—From the July Popular Mechanics Magazine. 1 LAKE ST. JOHN COUNTRY 4 Maps of the Lake St. John country ' l can be obtained from the Department of Colonization, Mines and Fisheries at Quebec. is a small map entitled "Carte Regionale de la Province de Quebec," showing location of fish and game territories on the line of Quebec and Lake St. John Railway." This map is divided into square miles. It * Is sold by Individuals under the title of "Sportsmen's Map," but I think J | may be obtained free from the public * office. The same office furnishes a 2 map on small scale, showing all of a eastern Quebec, and it may be possible also to obtain from them a larger and s more valuable map which shows in H considerable detail the country with in a hundred miles or more around Lake St. John. This larger map has no distinguishing legend upon it, Outing. 9 LIGHT-WEIGHT WATERPROOFING Carry a few yards of oiled silk. A piece seven and' a half feet square weighs but a couple of pounds and makes a fairly satisfactory tent or two or three when rigged up with cords and ingenuity. Its form and type can be varied to suit the emergency—an A tent for one man, a pyramid foi two, or a lean-to for three or four. A number of gromments around the edges help considerably in erecting fc it. The "oiled silk" does not seem to he silk, but It does contain a modi cum of oil. This is supposed to render 7 It waterproof.—Outing. i . _L. ; I FOR SALE i Brass Foundry in Harrisburg Complete trolley track, two jt blocks, hoist, tongues, shanks, 5 halts, moulding, bench, crucibles, > flasks and patterns.
