Motor Car Industry on a Firmer Basis Than Ever "Conditions In the automobile busi ness are more settled than at any previous time," says Richard E. Scott, general manager of the Reo Motor Car Company. "I can't recall a time when the out : ldok was so clear or the industry on a firmer basis than right now," con tinued the Reo man. "To the man on the outside I sup pose it looks Just the reverse—what with the many innovations, the many types of multi-cylinder cars and the other seemingly contradictory an nouncements, together with the appar ent slashing of prices. ! "But If you look below the surface I you will see that these are but Indi cations of stability frantic breaks In prices In mldseason, the adoption of new radical types of motors, [etcetera, are but effarts on the part of some makers to get "a place in the sun," while those who already enjoy that privilege—the better established makers—are announcing nothing radi cal. "In previous years the most disturb ing elements have been the "Wars of Sixes and Fours," or similar contro versies in which two factories about equally strong, have been aligned against each other. That served to divide the audience to buyers and to make all hesitate. This year, however, there Is no agreement save among the older concerns and they are with one accord bending their offorts to the re finement of existing standards and Ignoring the efforts of newer concerns lo establish new ones without hav i ing agreed among themselves as to what shall be the bnsls of that new i standard. "As a result we find, buyers. Instead iof being confused by the arguments of the many belligerents are. in their buying, at least, playing the part of neutrals, and giving their support to the established order of things. "For example, we have never' known the demand to be so brisk for conserva tive types as now, while those whose purse or preference dictates a larger car, seem perfectly satisfied with Sixes. Of course we are all watching the nov elties with Interest ns well as curiosity, but like President Wilson, we are more anxious to keep out of the fray than ! to engage in It, since the chances of a glorious victory are many times dis counted in our minds by the hazard of an ignominious failure."
