The wave of enthusiasm which swept yesterday's stock market to a higher level as the result of the United (States Steel's de cision subsided completely to-day. Trading was very light arid mainly represented the usual week-end settle ment of professional accounts. The only notable features were the Motor shares, which gained from 3 to 11 points. Steel recorded a one-point decline In the early dealings and other leaders re flected moderate pressure. Among the railways Canadian Pacltio was again the weakest feature, losing 2%. TIIE SMELL OF WAR The next minute, on my hands and knees, I was trying to force my bulk through one of the narrow openings; and. finally succeeding after flounder ing around in the mud, I found myself descending into a place the first im pression of which was taken by the nostrils. You breather a sickening damp heat, to bo expected in a hole in the ground, the floor of which was spread with decomposing straw, and your stomach revolted to the tench of unwashed clothing remaining long on your lamp around the casce, you saw it was empty. The men were in the firing pits. Then the inquiring white finger of the torch pointed to a picture of the Kaiser fastened lln some mirac ulous manner to the earthen wall, and under it you read. "Gott mtt uns," and you knew that the men out there in the pits believed that God was with them, and you found yourself wonder ing if ho was.—The Christian Herald.
