Egypt has narrowly escaped with his , life after the first attempt made to assassinate him. The young repre , sen tali ve of the British government in northern Africa is popular but , has 1 some enemies among the faction who , supported the former ruler. Two , shots were fired at the Sultan, but both ; went wide of the mark. A GOOD THING, TOO The whisky makers have apparently just woke up to the fact that the tem -1 perance wave which is sweeping over the land is not a mere spasm of re j form, to be sneered at, but a deep seated social impulse, which cannot stop until the saloon is put out of business. At the wholesale liquor dealers' convention in New York City, March Bth, a most gloomy view of the situa . tion was taken. ■ "The events of the last twelve months have created a situation more j grave than has ever before confronted our trade." the annual report said. 1 "Formerly we were called upon lo op pose town and county option. To-day we must combat State and nation wide prohibition. Originally our op ponents were few and scattered. To day they are many and united." It Is pointed out that the Kentucky manufacture of whisky in January, 1914, was over six million gallons, while in January this year the produc tion had fallen to less than two mil lion gallons. In Maryland, too. the rate of decrease was nearly as great. Of course, the falling off in whisky consumption will bring financial hard ship to the distillers, and it may con ceivably'affect the farmers to a slight degree. But most farmers will be reasonable about the adjustment. They would rather lose a few cents a bushel on corn and rye for a year or two than to have the good grain made into a drink for poisoning their own and their neighbors' sons.—Farm Life. KNEW THEM TOO WELL The wily politician is well described i by Henry Miller, the popular New York manager. "A certain Congress man," says Mr. Miller, "was visiting the town that had been his former home and had been asked to address an audience of his former neighbors. In order to assure them that his high' position had not caused him to put on any airs, he began his address thus: " 'My dear friends—l won't call you ladies and gentlemen—l know you too well to say that.' " —May Y'oung's ! Magazine.
