Fight Over Full Crew Bill Ends in Murder Special to The Telegraph Philadelphia, March 81.—In a des perate fight in the small tower of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, at Twenty-ninth and Jackson streets, last night, Harry S. Groves, a brake man, was shot and killed by Thomas D. Ferrick, a special detective of the company. Tho detective, not knowing he had killed the man, placed him on an en gine that was standing close by, and the engineer ran it with all speed to the passenger station at Twenty fourth and Chestnut streets. From there the man was taken to the Penn sylvania Hospital by policemen of the patrol near Reyburn. The doctors quickly saw that the brakeman was dead, the bullet having pierced his heart. Ferrick was arrested and held at. the Central police station, as were Thomas Clark, Charles Speetzer and John de Bussey, all brakemen. The last three were hold as material wit nesses. They were mixed up in the fight. The trouble began when the brake men gathered in the tower and Clark was accused of signing a petition call ing for the repeal of the full crew law. A fight followed, and the other men were beating Clark when some one telephoned to the main office ol' the road. Detective Ferrick was ordered to the scene of the trouble. He says the men all jumped on him. Ho claims that he drew his revolver, intending to only fire through the flooring and thus scare the men. In some man ner the bullet struck Groves, who was on the detective's back. Hot Fight Over Mine Bill on Senate Floor For the first time In the memory of the senator longest in service in tho upper branch of the Legislature there was a call of tho Senate ordered to-day in a fight to recommit to committee a bill relating to anthracite miners, and for the first time in a long while Sena tor James P. McNlchol, of Philadel phia, went down to defeat. The man who led the fight against Senator McNichol was Senator Thomp son, of Beaver, chairman of the com mittee of the committee on mines and mining who objected to a bill beinn taken from the consideration of his committee. Female Exemptions _____ Senator Snyder of Schuylkill county to-day introduced in the Senate a bill exempting from the operations of tho act of 1913 regulating the employ ment of females, any operator, train dispatcher or other employe who, by the use of the telegraph or telephone dispatches, reports, transmits, receives or delivers order pertaining to or af festing train movements. Such per sons, the bill further provides shall not be required or permitted to re main on duty longer than nine hours in any 24 hour period in towers, of fices, places and stations continuously operated night and day, nor for a longer period than 13 hours in tow 'ers, offices, places and stations operat ed only during the day time. In case of emergency, however, any such operator, dispatcher or employe may be permitted to remain on duty for four additional hours in a 24-hour pe riod or not exceeding three days In any week. Mr. Tompkins, Cambria, presented a bill pro\"iding that councilmen in any municipality shall net be eligible to the office of school director, and a school director shall not be eligible to the office of councilman in any muni cipality. Professor Johnson recently delivered his lecture at the Universit" of Penn sylvania and comes heer enroute from Johns Hopkins University to New York. For a number of years the pro fessor lived in Colorado. He has made a snecial study of the canyon, anil the lecture is therefore especially interest ing.
