Johnson, who Is professor of political economy at Cornell Uni versity, will he the chief speaker ol the evening at the peace mass meetlnp which will be held in the Technical high school auditorium, March 6, at 8 o'clock. Another speaker will also be secured lor the meeting, but Dr. Jobnann'n presence Is sufficient tc make the meeting well worth attend ing. The selection of an economist, ft practical man, used to dealing with tlgtires. causes and results, is but a portent of the present tendency of the peace movement. For years ardent advocates decried war as barbaric, im ! moral, unchristian. To-day emphasis is laid upon the economic loss of armies in time of peace, their engulf ing destruction in time ot war, their futility as a means of settling differ ences, and the possibilities of nations becoming civilized Individuals and set tling their quarrels by means of jus tice and courts. The new peace move ment not only recognizes all of tli« truth of the old, but adds the intensely practical side of dollars and cents, showing that war does not pay and cannot accomplish the end for which it was created, at the same time offer ing the world a substitute for this millstone about the neck of civil ization. The Pennsylvania Arbitration and Peace Society, of which a number of prominent men of Harrisburg are members, is arranging to bring Dr. Johnson to this city.
