HOLIDiV GIVES PIIISE TO RISE 111 STOCKS Copper Industry Improving, Ac cording to Reports in Wall Street By Associated I'rtss New York, Feb. 13. Yesterday's I holiday gave pause to a general rise in I stocks, which had its inception almost i at the outset of the week's operations j and gathered greater momentum to ! wards the close of Thursday's session. Many developments of an encouraging character contributed to the advance, foremost among these Veins the main tenance of the dividends on Canadian Pacific, Southern Pacific and American Sugar, concerning which there had ; been some apprehension. To these were added the very excel ; lent statement of unfilled tonnage of j the United States Steel Corporation for January showing an increase in ex ; cess of all estimates, and the marked i increase of production ot leading steel I centers. Prices of finished niater | ials in this industry were advanced, | Willi indications of further upward I tendency. That the copper industry j is improving seems to be borne out ,i in the voluntary advance of miners' j wages in the Michigan district and the restoration of dividends by one of the I conservative companies operating in I that region. There were other favorable factors, I including the abnormally low rates of j exchange in London, which induced l j the return of some of our gold from Canada, with prospects of further ln | flow. Exports of foodstuffs and other I commodities continue in unprecedent ed volume. I Railroad earnings leave much to i be desired, but make fair comparison with the latter months of 1914. Some of the samples analyzed were dangerously near the line of con tamination, but toward the end of the year the analyses demonstrated that the mixtures on sale were above the requirements of the law. Under the act. standards of purity are fixed for twenty-one mixtures of seeds and the report of James W. Kellogg, the chief chemist, who made the analyses with Howard E. Gensler, shows that alfalfa was the highest in purity. Twenty samples were shown to be 99.tf pure, the standard being 97 per cent. Foreign seeds of dangerou? character were missing from many samples and the ordinary pests Avert: not present in great quantity. The division of chemistry analyzed 202 of ficial samples and 376 sent in by per sons who paid the fee for analysis. In comparatively few cases the mix tures were found to be below stand ard and were quickly taken from the market. The reports on typical analysis show ed the following: Pure Seed Seed. Standard.
