Third streets they stopped, wheeled, | faced the Governor's box—and then j gracefully raised their trunks in sa lute to Pennsylvania's new governor.! Governor Brumbaugh smiled like a school boy at the elephant's circus; antics, and the crowds massed around | that vantage point, applauded. Long before the procession started the two elephants—and the wee don key, ihat formed a rather significant contrast—attracted the attention of thousands of small boys and grown ups, too. The elephants probably shared at tention with the spick and span State College boys' battalion and the Boys' j Brigade. The youthful military organizations marched by with Haunting colors in a way that set many a pretty feminine heart a tripping. The Highland Guard band with its tinkley bagpipes and the very Scotch looking gentleman who performed some real drum-stick gymnatlcs as he lammed away at his drums was an other feature that helped make the parade very, very well worth seeing. So the folks in the building in Federal Square got the benefit of some catchy band music while they worked. One of the earlier callers was the Elizabethllle Band, conducted by J. 11. Lyter. J. E. Lentz, vice-county chair man, marshaled the band, which play ed in the parade for the Camp Curtin Fire Company. J., Jan. 19.—Fourteen men were shot, four of them being mortally wounded in a pitched battle between 250 striking: luborers and fifty deputy sheriffs at the plant of the American Agricultural Chemical Com pany hero to-day. The fight occurred when the strik ers stopped a Central Railroad of New Jersey train from Elizabethport to see if the train brought strike breakers to the plants. Fifty deputy sheriffs, arm ed with rifles and revolvers, ran to the scene. A general encounter follow ed. At first only stones were used. Then some one fired a shot. This was the signal for a fusillade from both sides. None of the deputies was injured but many of the strikers fell. Most of the wounded men were shot through the legs, as the deputies fired low. The strikers dispersed. The four most ser iously wounded were taken to a hos pital at Elizabeth. It was said three men probably would die. The office employes were escorted from the train to the plant by the deputies without further incident. MRS. GEORGE I). SHOOP DIES Mrs. Naomi Jane Shoop, wife of George D. Shoop, 611 F'orrest street, died last evening after a lingering ill ness. She was 63 years old. She is survived by her husband and the fol lowing children: Miss Margaret, Miss Martha and Alexander, at home; Mrs. C. E. Wagner, of Steelton, and Mrs. C. S. Parker, of Lucknow. Mrs. Shoop was a member of the Ladies' Auxiliary to the Brotherhood of Railroad Train men. The funeral services will be held from her home on Thursday morn ling at 10 o'clock, after which T. M. ! STEAMER AND THREE SAILING VESSELS SINK BY RUSSIANS By Associated Press Sebastopol, via Petrograd, Jan. 19. i A detachment of Russian torpedoboats lias entered the bay of Sinope, a Turk ish port on the Black Sea in Asia Minor, and sent to the bottom a Turk ish steamer and three sailing vessels. The crews of all four ships were saved. The name of the steamer appears to have been the Meorgos. No date of this engagement is given. The news is trustworthy.
