This Is far from being a fact, for the only change that took place with the merger a few years ago, was that the executive of fices were moved to Philadelphia. j Harrisburg is the headquarters of what the Bell people term the Har risburg division, comprising more than 25,000 square miles and includ ing forty counties in Pennsylvania and two in New Jersey. At the head of the Harrisburg division are G. 8. Keinoehl, division manager; H. B. Porter, plant superintendent; J. T. Harris, traffic superintendent, and C. E. Booser, division auditor of re ceipts. So that the titles given above may be better understood, it might be explained that the division manager has charge of getting the business and collecting for it, together with the re lations of the company to the public; DECISION CAUSES SOME RECOVERIES Trading in Full List Accompanied by Irregular Movement r During Week By Associated t'rrss New York, Dec. 19. The most im portant event of a week replete with interesting developments was the de cision of the Interstate Commerce Com mission to grant a 5 per cent, increase I to the Eastern railroads. The announce ment of the commission's action was made early yesterday at a time when stocks were manifesting their greatest weakness, it was effective (n arrest ing the decline and bringing some ma -1 terlal recoveries. I Trading in the full list of stocks ap- I proved by the Exchange began on Tues- I day and was accompanied by a more or less irregular movement. Prices moved l upwards smartly at the outset, but soon 1 receded on moderate offerings. There i appeared to be a small investment de mand, but this was offset by persistent short selling. Sentiment was rather ; more cheerful until the latter part of I the week, when reduced dividends by such important railroads as Michigan Central. Louisville and Nashville and Atlantic Coast Line were announced. The foreign situation also helped to dampen the ardor of the bull side. , Conditions in the steel trade were unchanged, except that some increase of foreign business is expected early in | the coming year. The larger manufac turers are considering their wage schedules for that period, with lndlca ' tions of a reduction. The foreign trade I situation continues to favor this coun try, largely as a result of increased cotton exports. NEW YORK STOCKS New York, Dec. IS. Open. High. Low. Cyos. WALNUT STREET the plant, department installs the tele phones and sees that they are kept In working condition. The traffic de partment operates the telephones and has charge of the operating force, while the auditor of receipts sees that the subscriber is properly billed each month. The local employes, which it may be interesting to note, number 323, are very much interested in the growth of the company's business at this time, because the next few days will bring the number of subscribers' stations to the one hundred thousand mark. On the first of December the rec ords for the llarrisburg division showed 5it,563 telephones and at the rate the compony has been going, it will be just a few days before the one hundred thousand mark is attained. This figure does not include what the company terms connecting company or service stations. These latter sta tions are those of small rural com panies which connect with the Bell and which in the aggregate amount to about 30,000 in the Harrisburg divi sion. 8,500 Phones In City Alone In Harrisburg alone, there are about 8,500 telephones with 1,000 additional in the across-the-river towns and Steelton. When one of the Bell officials was asked if the attainment of the one hundred thousand mark would bring with it any kind of a celebration, he replied 'the times are not particularly propitious for any celebration which requires the expenditure of money." The term "the llarrisburg division" which the Bell people have seen fit to designate, takes with it quite a bit of advertising for Harrisb;irg all over the United States, because three men of prominence in the Bell ranks are products of the llarrisburg division. They are M. H. Buehler, now vice president and general manager of the Chesapeake and Potomle Telephone Company, with headquarters at Balti more and with jurisdiction over the States of Maryland, Virginia, the greater part of West Virginia and the District of Columbia; I*. H. Klnnard, vice president and general manager of The Bell Telephone Company of Penn sylvania, with headquarters in Phila delphia and in charge of the Bell interests in Pennsylvania, the lower half of New Jersey. Delaware, and parts of Ohio and West Virginia; and J. H. Crosman, Jr,, general commer cial superindendent, also with head- Iquarters in Philadelphia and in charge of the Commercial interests in the same territory as that over which Mr. Kinnard has control.
