"We have made a most thorough investigation of this charge," said County Chairman Horner this morn ing, "and find it to be absolutely with out foundation. It Is a dastardly Dem ocratic trick and jail Is the proper place for the Instigator. I never knew of anything more disreputable nor contemptuous. If the Democrats know that beer was sold in bottles bearing the pictures of Republican candidates why do they/ not tell where the sales were made Why should they shield a dealer who would do a thing like that? Let them come out and say where the beer was sold and then maybe somebody will believe them." Unless Matter Is Settled Soon Work of Dressing Slopes Will Be Held Up Hundreds of people walked the en tire length of the city yesterday be tween Maclay street and Iron alley and showed great interest in the River Front improvements. To-day will probably see the finish of the con struction of the steps with the excep tion of seven sections in the southern part of the city, the result of a con troversy between the contractors and the Board of Public Works.. Most people are wondering whether this controversy Is to have no end inas much as the three sections which hold up a total of seven sections were con demned a year ago. Unless this un . finished part Is completed it is certain j that the work of City (fommissioner Taylor in completing the grading of the slope will be interfered with here after. There was also much speculation as to the unsightly break in the wall and steps at the Market street bridge. Un less this is treated in some harmon ious way, it is likely to spoil the whole effect in the central part of the city. It has been suggested that there is no reason why the steps should not be continued northward to a point be neath the Market street bridge. This would still leave a considerable space for a driveway from the edge of the river. Nor has anything been done at this point regarding the connection of the sidewalk above and below the bridge, which seems to be without excuse or reason. Since it is practically understood that the concrete walk along the top of the wall from a point south of the Walnut street bridge to Maclay street will not be constructed this Fall, there is much that can be done in the way of grading the space between the bot tom of the slope and the wall to pre vent danger of the concrete work dur ing the high stage of the river. It is believed that this section between the slope and the wall should be thoroughly rolled and filled above the level of the top step so that there may be no danger of washing out beneath ithe steps.
