Bl ARBOR DAY WILL BE NOTABLE HERE FOR PLANTING OF TREES Expected That Hundreds of Sap lings Will Be Placed in Parks and in Streets Planting of trees is the duty of one generation to the succeeding gen eration and not only Individuals, but municipal as well as school authorities should participate in something like a campaign on the next fall Arbor Day, which is Friday of this week. In the Saturday Issue of the Tele graph there was printed a list of vari eties of trees most desirable for this section and It is hoped the City Park Department will set the pace in the planting of a large number of trees next Friday. Meanwhile Individual property owners should also get busy so that thousands of fine shade trees may be set out in this city. It would be well for the future if citizens on one street could in some way agree upon uniform planting so that there may be harmony in the years to come. It is an easy matter to get proper information from any of the tree experts in the city and before ordering trees the condition of the soil and the kind of tree most likely to flourish should be considered. It was suggested in this newspaper Saturday that there should be consid erable planting around the school buildings or Harrlsburg, as has been done in a few cases. Young trees should be properly staked so that they are not damaged by the wind and j those who know nothing about plant ing should learn from those who do. Shade trees in towns and cities must be chosen with regard to the art of street decoration. Of course, until Harrisburg has a tree commission, there will be more or less haphazard planting and the trees already planted will bo mifch neglected. Harrlsburg has gone too far along the way to permit the tree butcher to have his: own Bweet will in the city. The coming Arbor Day ought to be made notable for the number of trees planted and the care given In their selection. Republican Meetings Throughout County Are Planned For the Week Republican mass meetings will be held this evening at Bachmansvllle and Hockersville. Senator E. E. Beldleman, District Attorney Michael E. Stroup, John C. Nissley and several other speakers will take part. To-morrow evening there will be a rally at Oberlin. One of the speakers at Oberlin will be a former resident. Earl Renn, a young lawyer of this city. Mr. Renn la a son of the late Rev. U. S. G. Renn, who occupied the United Brethren pulpit at Oberlin for several years. Mr. Renn also resided in Middletown where his father was pastor «of a church there and ~will speak In that place Saturday evening. On Wednesday there will be a big rally at the Harrisburg Republican Club, as well as meetings at Walton ville, Hummelstown and Fort Hunter. Senator Beidleman will speak at Fort Hunter and Congressman Kreider at Hummelstown and both will return to Harrisburg for the club rally. Pure Food Show For Next Year Assured; Spaces Are Engaged The Pure Food Show of last week was such a success that another will be held next year. Spaces for the 1915 show have been engaged already and indications are that there will be room for all who desire to exhibit. Statistics furnished by the C. F. Bonsor Company, of Philadelphia, at the close of the show Saturday night, indicate that Harrisburg has a large coffee drinking population. The Bon sor Company is producer of the fa mous Samore coffee which is sold to consumers in sanitary sealed ages. During the week 18,000 cups of coffee made from the Samore product were given out. This required five demonstrators, who were kept busy afternoon and evening. The Samore Company had the largest number of demonstrators at tl>e exhibit.
