The mystery of the western operation is complicated by the news from Berlin which ignores General Von Kluck's efforts on the German right while indicating that the Ger man attack on Verdun is proceeding successfully. Official reports conveyed to the Ba varian Sixth Corps seefn to indicate that that army Is merely expected to prevent the sending of allied rein forcements northward. If the Ger man attack on the southerly exposure of the Verdun forts, assisted by the great siege guns, succeeds, the com plete investment of Verdun will ensue. The situation along the Russian bor ders is becoming as obscure as are the western operations. Berlin re ports that the victory of General Von Hlndenburg will clear East Prussia of Russians, but military experts at Petrograd declare that It is incredible that the Russians should give up the investment of Koenlgsberg unless suf fering greater disaster than that which has been reported. Russians Successful In Russian Poland the Russians still seem to be successful, while op erating against the Austrians alone, but they are making less impression On the combined Austro-German ar mies on the Vistula. The stand being made on the Vistula has caused sev eral military experts at Petrograd to assert that German reinforcements from France are being sent to Gallcla instead of to East Prussia, as was at first reported. This is done, accord ing to the opinion of these experts, because Germany feared that an over whelming disaster of the Austrian forces might lead the ,dual monarchy to conclude peace independently of Germany. Other expert observers in Petrograd are equally firm in the opin ion that the German veterans from the fields of Belgium and France have been sent to East where their presence is believed to account for the Russian check. The most substantial gain by Russian forces within the past twenty-four hours has been the capture of Tomaszow, which prob- I ably clears the way for the advance of the Russian center on the Austro- German forces on the Vistula river. Both Optimistic Both Belgium and France, it ap pears in London to-day, are optimistic enough to begin to consider reoccupy ing their capitals. Brussels is still in the hands of the Germans, hut there are many signs that the forces of Ger many are moving out of that section of the country. It is reported to have been reoccupied by Belgian troops fol lowing the departure of the Germans without waiting for the supplies prom ised by that city. The story of a mysterious booming of guns in the North Sea has been re vived. It is. however, given no cre dence insomuch as a recent sweeping of the North Sea by a British fleet did not disclose the presence of any Ger man warships. Ono of the principal parts in "Peg O' My Heart" is that of Michael, play ed by a "purp," who seems to enjoy his dramatic appearance as much as does Miss Laurette Taylor the star role. This fascinating actress has a clever canine story: "Said Flossie to May: 'Just listen while I talk to Fido. He's so intelli gent* . „ " 'Does doggie want to turn out for a walk?' " 'Mow-wow!' " 'Of course on does; but 'oo just had a bath and oo might tatch cold.' " 'Bow-wow!' " 'lf 'oo stays home, I'll div 'oo a piece of cake.' " 'Bow-wow!' '* 'I knew 'oo would. What kind of cake?'
