OLMSTED, Referee. , London Caused Closing of New York Exchange Many Failures Recorded, But More Would Have Been Registered if Markets Had Remained Open By Associated Press New York. Aug. 1. After four days of severe unsettlement, resulting from the Austro-Hungary situation, the New York Stock Exchange decided to dis continue operations and yesteray clos ed for an indefinite period. It Is altogether likely that the ex change might have proceeded to do business, regardless of the more me nacing war outlook, but for the fact that the closing of the London Ex change left it in a position where it would have had to absorb the stock of ferings of all the world's markets. This, It was reasoned, would have re sulted In a titanic wave of selling. The preceding days of the week were a sucession of more or less convulsive movements, which had their original start in heavy sales of our securities by London and the Continental markets. The one topic of discussion and cause for apprehension lay across the water, all domestic factors, such as the crop outlook, delay in the Eastern freight rate decision and the quarterly state ment of the United States Steel Cor poration sinking into the background. The heavy selling of stocks at steadily diminishing values was accompanied by demoralization of foreign exchange and the imposition of almost prohibitive "war risks" demanded by the marine Insurance companies for shipment of gold to London and Paris which again attained large proportions. * A number of failures on the Stock Exchange and Cotton Exchange followed the closing of those instlttulons, but It is believed that more disastrous effects would have resulted but for the sus pension of business.
