PRANKS OF LIGHTING
Columbia, Pa., July 17.—Lightning
played peculiar pranks across the
Susquehanna river in York county
during the storm Wednesday evening.
A number of men were threshing in
the barn on the Yohn farm, three!
miles west of Wrightsville, when a bolt j
struck the barn and killed a mulej
standing in the stable. A horse in the |
same stable was badly stunned and |
may die from the shook. The men
were greatly shocked but no other
damage resulted.

MEATS DOUBLE IN PRICE
Columbia, Pa., July 17. Meat
prices in this county have taken a sud
den rise, having been advanced from
2 to 4 cents a pound. The rise in
prices Is about the same on all kinds
of meat, and round steak has reached
the 25-cent mark, while othep kinds
are correspondingly high. The ad
vance movement has also extended to
poultry, which has also kept pace
with prices for other meats.

PICNIC AT BOILING SPRINGS
Armed with baskets filled with
"eats," more than 2fto people, Including
men, women and children, left for Boil
ing Springs, yesterday morning, where
the annual picnic of the Knights of the
Golden Kagle and Ladies' Temples was
held.
The picnic was held under the direc
tion of lodges In Cumberland, Kranklln
and T>auphln counties. The big fpature
of the evening was a hand concert
by the Eighth Regiment Band, of Car
lisle.

Will Listen to Application of Har
risburg and Mechanicsburg
Next Wednesday
Almost three solid days of hearings
have been set for the Public Service
Commission next week In order that
contracts, leases, charter applications
and other proceedings may be cleared
up and August devoted to considera
tion of Important cases like the Indus
trial railroads, tariffs and big engi
neering propositions in Philadelphia
and Wilkes-Barre.
The commission will meet Tuesday
and the first hearings will be on
claims of excessive fares in vicinity of
Chambersburg and excessive rates for
electric light in Lewlstown. Among
contracts to be acted upon on Wed
nesday are the city of Pittsburgh and
Equitable Gas and lighting contracts
for the city of Lancaster, boroughs of
, AVernersvllle, Sutervllle, Canonsburg,
| Carrick and Mechanicsvllle. Six elec
tric companies are asking charters
the same day. The Bell Telephone
and Central District Telephone Com
ipanles will submit fourteen contracts,
those of the Central being with Alle
gheny, Clarion and Armstrong coun
ties and one between the two com
panies. The Lake Erie, Franklin and
Clearfield has applied for approval of
