MORE CHURCHES
JOIN 111 BIG FALL
REVIVAL PROJECT
Several Thousand Hazletonians
Expected to Make Trip to
Harrisburg
More churches to join in the move
ment; committees busily at work; a
plan for a gigantic excursion here
when Stough is well under way—such
are the present developments in the
Stough evangelistic project.
The Rev. Edwin E. Curtis, the sec
retary of the co-operating ministerium,
has sent out invitations to every
church not now participating in the
Stough campaign and as a result sev
eral inquiries have been received
which would indicate that a number
of churches will join with those now
enlisted in the campaign. Up to to
day one church, the United Evangelical
Church of Rutherford Heights, the
Rev. P. K. Bergman, pastor, has ac
cepted the invitation and will be added
to the list of co-operating churches.
Plans are afoot in Hazleton for a
visit to this place to greet the evan
gelist, who has concluded a campaign
in that city. It is planned to start a
Harrisburg-trip fund, putting away
small amounts, so that the total shall
reach the sum required to make the
trip." It is believed that between 2,500
and 3,000 persons will be interested
enough to make the journey here. In
addition it is the expectation of the
projectors of the excursion to take on
parties at Mount Carmel, Berwick and
other places that Stough has been in.

RISE IN LONDON IS
REFLECTED IN NEW YORK
Cheerful Feeling Abroad Is Felt by Wall Street Brokers in
Today's Trading
By Associated Press I
New York, June 18. The cheerful
feeling in London, owing to brighten
ing of the political outlook, made Itself
felt in the home market at the opening
to-day. There was no more life in the
dealings than yesterday, but the down
ward movement which had been in pro
gress for two days was checked. The
advance of American stocks in London
resulted in a corresponding rise among
the international issues here and as
trading got under way«t.ie whole list
hardened. Railroad stocks made the
best showing under the lead of Union
Pacific, which advanced nearly a point.

Steering Gear of
Lost Steamer Out of
Order, It Is Said
By Associated Press
Quebec, June 18.—C. S. Haight, of
counsel for the owners of the collier
Storstad, which rammed and sank the
| steamship Empress of Ireland in the
j St. Lawrence river with the loss of
| more than a thousand lives, to-day
startled the commission which is in
. vestigating the disaster with a state
ment that word had reached him that,
!? n the night of the disaster the steer
ing gear of the Empress was dis
] abled. .He had been so informed, he
said, by Quartemaster Goiway, of the
Empress, about to depart for England.
Lord Mersey, chairman of the court
of inquiry, immediately took a hand
in the proceedings and it was stated
that Goiway would be called as a wit
ness this afternoon. Goiway was on
the bridge at the time of the accident
and, according to Haight's statement,
said the Empress' steering gear was
jammed. Captain Kendall, of the Em
press, called to the stand, repudiated
Golway's story, as did Chief Engineer
Sampson.
