S. Houghton, M. D., No.ll, North Eighth Street, Phila delphia, Pa. This is a truly wonderful remedy for Indi gestion, Dyspepsia, Jaudice, Liver Com plaint, Constipation, and Debility. Curing after Nature's own method, by Nature's own agent, the Gastric Juice. ty Half a spoonln lof this Fluid, infused in water, will digest or dissolve, Five Founds of Roast Beef in about ttco hours, out of the stomach. DIGESTION. Digestion is Chiefly performed in the stomach by the aid of a fluid which freely exudes from the inner coal of that organ, when in a state ol health, called the Gastric Juice. This fluid is the Great solvent of the Food, the Purifying, Preserving, and Stimula ting Agent of the stomach and intonstincs. Without it there will bo no digestion,—llo conversion of food into blood, and no nu trition of the body; but rather a foul, torpid, painful, and destructive condition of the whole digestive Apparatus. A weak, half dead, or injured stomach produces no good Gastric Juice, and hence the disease, dis res sand debility which ensue. 2 Pti'siN ami Rennet.—Pepsin is tho chio element, or great Digesting Principle of the Gastric Juice. It is found in great abun dance in the solid parts of the human stom ach after death, and sometimes causes the stomach to digest itself, or eat bself up. It is also found in the stomach of animals, as the ox, calf, &c. It is tho material used by farmers in making cheese, called Rennet, j the effect of which has long been the spe cial wonder of the dairy. The curdling ol ' milk is tho first process of digestion. Ren net possesses astonishi-g power. Tho stom ach of a calf will curdle nearly one thou j sand limes its own weight of milk. 800 I.iebig slates that, ! One part of Pepsin dis solved ill sixty thousand parts of water, wil j digest meat and other food." Diseased I stomachs produce no good Gastric. Juice . Rennet or Pepsin. To show that this want may be pcriectly supplied, we quote the j following SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE! Baron Liebig, in l.is celebrated work on nimal Chemistry, says: "All Artificial Di eslive Fluid analago us to the Gastric Juice, may be readily prepared from the nticous "membrane of the stomach of the Call, which various articles of food, as meat and eggsj will be softened, changed, and diges i-d, juslln the same manner as tliey would bo in the human stomach." Dr. Pereira in his famous trea'.ise on "Food and Diet," published by Fowlers & Wells, New York, page 35. states tho same great fact, and describes the method of prep aration. There are few higher authorities than Dr. Pereira. Dr Combe, in his yaluable writings on ho "Physiology of Digestion," observe that "a diminution of the due quantity o the Gastric Juice is a prominent and all pre tailing cause of Dyspepsia;" and he stale, that "a distinguished professor of medicine in London, who was severely afflicted w h this complaint, finding every thing else to fuil, had recourse lo the Gastric Juice, oh tained from the stomach of I'ving which proved completely succcsslul." Dr. Graham, author of the famous work on "Vegetable Diet,'.' says: "it is a remar kable fact in physiology, that the stomachs of animals, macerated in water, imjiart to the fluid the property of dissolving various articles of food, and of effecting a kind of artificial digestion of them in 110 wise dif ferent from the natural digestive process." Dr. Simon's great work, the "Chemistry of Man," (Lea & Blanchard, Pliila.. 1846, pp. 321-2): "The discovery of PEPSIN lb ms a new era in the chemical history of Di gestion. From recent experiments we know that food is dissolved as rapidly in an artificial digestive fluid, prepared from Pep sin, as it is in the natural Gastric Juice it self." Professor Dunglison of the Jefferson Col lege, Philadelphia, in his great work oil Hu man Physiology, devotes more than fifty ' I',"*"" ~ —•"o.uuuion of this subject. His experiments with Pi BeaurßOm,~ tt Gastric Juice, obtained from the living hu man stomach and from animals are well known. "In all cases," he says, "digestion occurred as perfectly in the artificial as the natural digestions." As a DYSPEPSIA Cl'llEß, DrHoughton's preparation of Pepsin has produced the most marvellous effects, curing cases of De bility, Emaciation, Nervous Decline, and dispeptic Consumption, supposed to bo on the very verge of the grave. It is imposs ble to give the details of cases in the limit of this advertisement—but authenticate certificates have been of more than two hun dred Remarkable Cures, in Philadelphia, New York, and Boston alone. These were nearly all desperate cases, and the cures were not only rapid and wonderful, but per manent. It is a great Nervous Antidote ( and par ticularly useful for tendency to billious dis order, Liver Complaint, Fever and Ague, or badly treated Fever and Ague, and the ev il eflects of Quinine, Mercury, and other drug upon the Digestive organs, after a long sick ness. Also, for excess in eating, and the too free use of ardent spirits. It almost rec onciles Health with Intemperance.
