Farmer's Department. When to Cut Timothy Grans. We find Dr. Kirtland's contribution to Mr Flint'c book on Grasses and Forogo Plants very appropriately quoted, at tlrit time by the Prairie Farmer of tbo 4th, , .. ... , . .., .it. nnu as it will be read with peculiar tutor- ' . csijuii now, wc nivo mo loiiovfinr; oo- .. ill c ix t . solvations ana conclusions of Dr. Ivirt . i . . , .. ii r 1 1 . . . t . .. . ,, land, at (ho satnr. tltnu COmmDding tliom to tho thoughtful consideration of tha roa dor: 'Timothy grass is n perennial plant, whioh renown itsolf by annual formation of bulbs, or perhaps moro correctly speak ing, tubers, in which tho vitality of tbo plant is concentrated during tho winter.- These form in whatever locality tbo plant is selected, without reference to dryness or mniatnrn. tfrnin tliPin nrnnnoil 1ip ninllra which support the leaves and head, and from tho same sourco spread out the nu morous fibres forming tbo true roots, 2. To ensure a perft'ot dcvolopoment of tubers, a curtain amount of nutrition must be assimilated in tbo loaves, and returned ..it f.. . .. , . to tUO base Ol tllC plant, through thO , i, stalks 3, As soon as tho process of nutrition is oomploted, it becomes manifest by tbe appearance of a stato of desiccation, or dryness, always commencing at a point directly abovo cither tho first or second joint of the stem near tho orown of tho tuber. From this point this desicoation gradually progresses upwards, and tho last portion of the stalk that yields up its freshness is that adjoining the head, Coin cident 'with the beginning of this process, is the full developcmcnl of thu seeds, and with its progress tho mature Its earliest nppearancc is evidence that both tho tu bers and soeds havo received their requi site supplies of nutrition, and that neither tho stalk nor the leaves arc longor necess ary to aid them in completing their matur ity. A similar process occurs in the uni on just abovo tho crown ol tho bulb, indi cating iho maturity of that organ, abovo tho point where dryness or desiccation had begun, 4, If tho stalk ba out from the tubsrs beforo this evidenca of maturity has ap peared, the necessary supplies of nutrition will be arrested, their proper growth will cease, and an effort will bo made to repair tbo injury by sending out small lateral tu bers, from which tho weak and unhoaltby stalks will proceed at the expense of the original tubers. All will ultimately per ish, cither by the droughts of autumn or tbo cold of winter. 5, Tbo tubers, togothcr with ono or two ol the lower joints oi the stalk, remain fresh and green during the wintor, if left to take their natural course, but if, by any means, this groen portion be severed, at any season of the year, the result will bo tho death of the plant. From th'cso five propositions the follow ing conclusions arc drawn : 1. That Timothy grass cannot, under &nyctrcumstrnoc9, be adapted for pasture; as tbo closo nipping of horses and bheep is fatal to the tubers, whioh arc also ex tensively destroyed by swino it allowed to run in tho pasture. 2. That tbo proper time for mowing Timothy is at any titno after the process of desiccation has commenced on tbe stalk as noted in tho third proposition. It i not very essential whether it is performed a week earlier or later, providcd it be post poned (ill that cvidcnccof maturity bus bocome manifest. 3. All attempts at closo shaving tbr sward should bo avoided, whilo using tbt aoytho, and in gauging mowing machines, care should bo taken to run them so high that they will not cut the Timothy below tho second joint above tho tuber." Mr. Flint says ; "I have frequently, during tho past autumn, pullod up tho bul bous roots of timothy from tbo etubblf from which a heavy crop can bo cut with the soylhcj.whilo in flower, for tho pur poso of studying tbo changes which were taking place in in theso tubers, and have found them very similar to those repre sented in tho 3d and 4th propositions, not only on moist, damp soils, but alto nn soils comparatively dry. Any furmor can satisfy himself of tho correctness oi theso representations by a littlo obscrva tion in his own fields ; and s.3 tho point is of practical importance, it is worthy ol careful attention.
