DVmor's Department. ODJOTS OP FOOD FOR CATTLE. TVhy do animals require moro foon in l oM than in warm weather, and wliy poffet more if ilcprived of it ! The objects of food are three : 1st, to onpply material for growth to growing animals, and to compensates for wastos, both in tho growing and in those already grown ; 2d, to afford warmth, by a pro. eras similar to combustion, whicn cer tain ingredients of tho lood undergo in the animals body ; 3d, to afford pleasures. The Creator his provided for the hap- pincss, as well as tho mere cxislance, of all his' creatures, Practically tho objects of food for do mtBtic animals aro two ; to supply mat ter for tho body, mm to sustain its warmth. The portions of food contain ing nitrogen, as the gluttcn in tho ccr rals and the lean of tho meats go to form muscle, tendons, skin, and all other tiss u3 of tho body, Those not containing nitrogen, as the starch in the cereals, nnd the fat of meat, servo aa fuel to keep np the. tempcratur8 of the body, As God has done all things well, wo may concludo that, in the natural food of an imals, grass in summer, and hay, grain nnd roots in winter, there are about the right proportions of hcal-producing and flesh-producing matter. It is so beyond question ; and if no unreasonable domaud is made upon eitccr, the two, aaisvul garty said of the bread and cheese, will come out oven. If an animel is kept in a warm stall by night, and in a sunny yard by cay, with sheds to detend from cold winds, his bread and cheese will come out above even. In that part of his food which produces wrowth there will bo mixed just about enough of tho fuel portion to keep him wai.n. With a fair allowance lie will be about as contented and huppy as an oyster in deep water his food will be well digested, and there will be no loss. But if you sond him adrift to find the best shelter he can behind a tree or a rail-fence, then, for the sake of the heat-producing parts of his food, ho will devour moro than would otherwise be required ; and a largo pro portion of tho extra food will be lost What becomes of it, need not now bo explained ; for every one knows that cattlo shivcrinu with the cold, never grow, however much they eat, unless be to grow smaller; and although some believe, or pretend to, that animals shockingly abused through thouwinter. will grow all the better in spring and summer, their belief will hardly obtain currency among the experienced farmers They know tho direct contrary that when the growth is chocked by severe suffering, it is slow to recommence, and that all the extra food cousumed for the want of shelte'r is worse than a dead loss. Man's obligations of kindness to the animals that surveyes his interest, should impel him to furnish shelter. But aside from this, there is a question of economy. Tho Esquimaux drinks a quart of train oil and cats plenty of fat seal, and con trives to keep himself from freezing in a very rigorous climate. In this latituds, cattlo without a shelter might escape intolerable suffering if you would give them plenty of corn meal and oil cake and other fattening and heat-producing foods. But would this be economical ? Without shelter cattle must cither be fed very expensively, or suffer very cruelly ; and in cither caso will they pay for their food. With a warm- shcltcs, they will make a fair growth, on modeato keeping. It is a great deal provide shelter, than to get along without. MILKING COWS. If you would have them gentle and quiet, treat them gently and kindly. See that those who milk them can control themselves, govern their passions, speak low and kindloy under any provocation, and soon the cows will learn that they arenotgowing to Bo abused, and will submit to tho opperation. Milking ohouldbe performed at regular hou"s, not varying fifteen minutes from one day to to the other. No talking or laughing should bo permitted at the time, and it should beTas speedily as possible. TO MEASURES II AY-STACKS. "More than twenty years since," says an old farmer, "I copied the following method for mearuring hay, from an old publication, and, having verified its gen eral accurancy, I havo both bought and sold by it, and I beliovo it may bo useful to many farmers where the moans of weighing are not at hand, Multiplied the length b-eadth, and hcighth into each other, and if the hay is somewhat settled, ten solid yards make a ton. Clover will take from ten to twclvo solid yards per ton. VST Teach yonr boys to shut doors and gates after thcin. Also to clean their shoes beforo entering the house, and to wash, nnd to comb their hair before com. ing to raceli.
