I offer the following suggestion's,
the result of my close observation
and long experience : If the color
be light, sorrel or chestnut, his feet,
legs and face white—these are marks
akindfieSS. If he is broad and .
between the eyes he may be depended
on as a horse for being trained to
anything; as respects such horses,
the more kindly you treat them the
better you will be treated in return.
Nor will a horse of this description
stand a whip if well fed. If you
want a safe horse, avoid one that is
dish faced. He may be so far gentle
as not to scare, but he will, have :too
'Mich go-ahead in him to. be safe
with every-body. If you want a fool,
but a horse of great bottom, get a
deep.bay with not a; white hair 'about
him. If his face is a little dished,
so. much the worse. Let no Man
ride such a horse that is not au ex
pert rider ; they are always tricky
and unsafe. If you want one ; that
will 'never" give out, novel' "buj-: 'a
large, overgrown one. .A black horse
cannot stand the heat, nor a white
one the cold. If you - want a gentle
horse, get one with more or less
white about the bead, the. more the
better: Selections thus made are of
great docility ,aud gentle EICSS.'7--„E.x..

SWELLED LEGS IN . HonsEs.--Many
horses are subject to swelled legs.
In old horses it arises from . conges
tion of the legs, which depend on the
weakened action of the heart incident
to old age. There is not much to be
done for cases of this description.
Another class of cases occurs in horses
of a lymphatic temperament, and the
exciting causes are high feed 'and
want of exercise. The horse's legs
become swollen, hot and painful, and
the horse goes lame otr -the 'affeCted
limb. The proper treatment for such
cases is low diet and laxative medi
cine. In severe cases I have some
times sacrificed the affected leg, but
this is only advisable in the early and
acute stage of the attack. Half an
ounce of nitrate of potash :may be
given once a fortnight to horses that
are subject to swelled legs, and whiqt
it recurs frequently, once a, weeL
The': 'Swollen leg sometimes attains
enormous dimensions, and the swel
ling may,become permanent. I have
seen a horses leg swollen nearly as
thick as a man's body, and in one
case (which
• I epniined after death
from a different malady) I found that
the swelling was produced by the ef
fusion of lymph between the skin anJ
subjacent tissues.—Bural -Workr.
How TO TREAT BALKY
.B . ORSES.—
If you have balky horses, it is your
own fault and not the horses, for if
they do not pull true; there is some
cause for it, and if pan will reinoye
the came, the'effect will cease. When
your hoyse balks he'is excited, and
does not know what you want him
to do. When he gets a, little exci
ted, stop him live or ten thimites . ; let
him become calm: to .the balky
horse; 'pat him and speak "gently. to
him; and as soon as he is over his
excitement, he will, in nine cases (Mt
of ten, pull at the Word. Whipping
and lashinz and Swearing' only make
the matter worse. After you have
gentled him awhile, and his excite
mai:4_lms eeoled down, take. him
.by
the bits ; turn him each way, a few .
minutes, as far as you can ; pull out
the tongue ; gentle him a little ;
rein him ; then step bef.ire the bAky
horse, and let the other stait first;
then you can take them anywhere
yon wish. A balky horse is always
high spirited, and starts T:ick; half
the pull is out before the Oti: , :r starts:
by standing before him tLe other
starts first. By close applifsl. to
this rule, you can make an::
horse pull. If a horse has'
spoiled, - you should hitch
empty wagon, and pr.::
awhile on level ground;
small load, andincre
ly, caressing him as
short time you can haw;

From 600 to 1,000 loads of immure

WEED SEWING MACHINE
THE BEST
EQUALLY GOOD FOR FINE OR HEAVY
WORK.
The attention of the public is now earnestly
invited to the latest production in the lino of
Sewing Machines, which from that fact alone
ought to be the best, and with the most unaf
fected sincerity it is asserted that this produc
tion is unexcelled by any machine ever pre
sented to the public. In it are combined sim
plicity of invention, thoroughness of construc
tion, convenience for using, superio rity of ex -
ecution and neatness of arrangements.
The No. 2or rotary feed machine, is un
equaled for manufacturing, or heavy family
sewing, passing over uneven surfaces without
change of speed or stitch and operating on any
material from wadding to lead.
The No. 1 or Drop Feed Machine is particu
larly adapted to delicate family work yet it
will execute heavy and dcflicult sewing with
out strain or damage to any of its mechanism.
Both machines has a straight short needle,
make the tight lock stitch, leave an imitable
sclfadjusting tension, find will stitch, hem,
fell, bind, cord, braitl, ruffle, tuck, quilt and
gather and sew on at the same time. Perform
ing a greater variety of work than any ono
machine.
The style of wood work and finish of ma
chines arc various, and prices accordingly.
Full instructions given and satisfaction guar
enteed.

It is quiet, light-running, and capable of
performing a range and variety of work
never before attempted upon a single ma
