I offer the following suggestion's, the result of my close observation and long experience : If the color be light, sorrel or chestnut, his feet, legs and face white—these are marks akindfieSS. If he is broad and . between the eyes he may be depended on as a horse for being trained to anything; as respects such horses, the more kindly you treat them the better you will be treated in return. Nor will a horse of this description stand a whip if well fed. If you want a safe horse, avoid one that is dish faced. He may be so far gentle as not to scare, but he will, have :too 'Mich go-ahead in him to. be safe with every-body. If you want a fool, but a horse of great bottom, get a deep.bay with not a; white hair 'about him. If his face is a little dished, so. much the worse. Let no Man ride such a horse that is not au ex pert rider ; they are always tricky and unsafe. If you want one ; that will 'never" give out, novel' "buj-: 'a large, overgrown one. .A black horse cannot stand the heat, nor a white one the cold. If you - want a gentle horse, get one with more or less white about the bead, the. more the better: Selections thus made are of great docility ,aud gentle EICSS.'7--„E.x.. ==l SWELLED LEGS IN . HonsEs.--Many horses are subject to swelled legs. In old horses it arises from . conges tion of the legs, which depend on the weakened action of the heart incident to old age. There is not much to be done for cases of this description. Another class of cases occurs in horses of a lymphatic temperament, and the exciting causes are high feed 'and want of exercise. The horse's legs become swollen, hot and painful, and the horse goes lame otr -the 'affeCted limb. The proper treatment for such cases is low diet and laxative medi cine. In severe cases I have some times sacrificed the affected leg, but this is only advisable in the early and acute stage of the attack. Half an ounce of nitrate of potash :may be given once a fortnight to horses that are subject to swelled legs, and whiqt it recurs frequently, once a, weeL The': 'Swollen leg sometimes attains enormous dimensions, and the swel ling may, become permanent. I have seen a horses leg swollen nearly as thick as a man's body, and in one case (which • I epniined after death from a different malady) I found that the swelling was produced by the ef fusion of lymph between the skin anJ subjacent tissues.—Bural -Workr. How TO TREAT BALKY .B . ORSES.— If you have balky horses, it is your own fault and not the horses, for if they do not pull true; there is some cause for it, and if pan will reinoye the came, the'effect will cease. When your hoyse balks he'is excited, and does not know what you want him to do. When he gets a, little exci ted, stop him live or ten thimites . ; let him become calm: to .the balky horse; 'pat him and speak "gently. to him; and as soon as he is over his excitement, he will, in nine cases (Mt of ten, pull at the Word. After you have gentled him awhile, and his excite mai:4_lms eeoled down, take. him .by the bits ; turn him each way, a few . minutes, as far as you can ; pull out the tongue ; gentle him a little ; rein him ; then step bef.ire the bAky horse, and let the other stait first; then you can take them anywhere yon wish. A balky horse is always high spirited, and starts T:ick; half the pull is out before the Oti: , :r starts: by standing before him tLe other starts first. From 600 to 1,000 loads of immure are put on the place, yearly ; all:that is made is carefully saved, 'and there are compost heaps of muck anti weeds. A :good deal of manure is hauled from Peekskill, and consid erable quantities of unleached ashes are bought of the farmers at thirteen cents per bushel.. When he was asked if the farmers were so ignorant as to sell their ashes at this price, or even at all, he said, "Yes, but don't prin't it !" The clear stone yellow peaches, white at the stone, are the best- Weigh the fruit after it is pared. •To each pound of fruit allow apound of loaf-sugar. Put a layer of sugar at the bottom of the preserving -kettle, and then a layer of fruit, and to on until the fruit is all in. Stand it over hot ashes until the sugar is entirely dissolved ; then boil them until they are clear; take them out piece by piece, and spread them on a dish free from syrup. Boil the syrup in the pan until it jellies ;'• wh en the peaches are cold, fill the jars half full with them, and fill fip with the boiling syrup. Let them stand a short time covered with a thin cloth, then pint on brandy paper, and cover them close with corks, skin, or pa per. From twenty to thirty minutes will generally be sufficient to pre serve them. HANDLING OF SDEEP.—Daily = do we see sheep' grabbed by the wool and hauled about. 'Will people never learn better ?
