Language as the offspring of nature. polnta us to that time when our tlrst parents ; were living In accordance with nature. Nature has language and she speaks clearly, and Is understood by all mankind. The rustling or the wind, the hurricane, nod all speak to tin In pleas . ant language. lie showed how clearly nature's language is written in the Book of Nature, and how deeply the alltiellni nature reads, and how much he Is interested In them. Much exceedingly valuable Information Is hound up in words of daily usage. Words betray our nativity by nor provincialisms, which be proved by very many happy aid well timed, its weal as -humorous, incidents. • .Thousands of our towns and villages Indicate by their names whence their founders same. Moral and religious benefit may be derived from swords. The old . Hebrew 131bie contains no less than eleven different names for wine, and all hav ing a had signification. The names given to Intisx heating drinks have the same general roots. This Is a subject, fellow-teachers, even worthy of onr serious perusal and attention. Latin,.Greek, In connection with German, are the very Keystone of all languages. No one can be a good student of the English language unless be understands something of these languages. The way we use words is a most amusing and very Interesting study. Corruption of language leads to corruption of taste, and corruption of taste to corruption of morals. The common Make of exaggeration is equally as had, if not morally, at least intellectually. Here the Professor conclusively showed how exag geration and seeing as well as usage, almost be come a disease, as much so as the taste of the drunkard, for intoxicating drinks Is a disease. Here the Professor was very pleasant in his anec dotes. The hest authors use the plainest lan guage, and consequently are most admired. Ile wan particularly severe upon those wordy and voluminous speakers In the profession. He very lucidly explained various paradoxes of the language. Words are constantly Increasing in number, idioms and phrasos nail strange words are contin ually hobbling op from English fountains which he proved by rations, Min examples.
