la .07 111311 FIRM ANLEBIGAN FLAG EN MEICICO. The honor of planting the first American flag that ever floated in the city of Mexico, belongs to General John A. Quitman, now Chairman of the Military Committee of the 11. S. House of Representatives. "/n hot pursuit," es General Scott graphically remarks; Gen. Quitman continued to press forward under flank and direct fires,- carried an intermediate battery of -two guns, and entered the gates before two o'clock in the afternoon, but not without pro portionate loss, increased by his steady main. tenance of that position." After he got within the city, he added several defenses to the position he had won, to shelter his men, for he was now 41 under the guns of the formidable citadel yet to be subdued !" Here he awaited until morning. It was a perilous situation, but to the undaunt ed hearts of the commander and men, nothing was insurmountable. The next day, and after the fighting had ceased, ho took his march for the heart of the city of the Montezumas, and reaching the great plaza, ho planted guards and •' hoisted the colors of the United States on the IVational plaza !" The American flag was first unfo'dcd to the breeze, in the city of Mexico, on that day, by the gallantry of one among the illustrious men of the South. It is a bright event in history. From that time might well be dated the first impulses of the American people, and of the liberalists of Mexico to introduce American in- I stitntions and the Anglo-Saxon race. la - Two CIIILDILEI4 KILLED. —Two children were killed at Tiltonsville, Ohio, last week, un der painful circumstances. The day being pleasant, the two children bad taken a babe and gone out doors to play. Last winter some trees had been felled and cut into saw-log lengths,, and left lying on the hill side. The thawing and washing of the dirt on the hill-side bad so loosened one of the logs that of its own weight it gave way, and rolled down the hill at the particular time when, these little children were at play, and rolling over the party, the two eldest were instantly crushed to death ; and, remarkable as it may appear, the little babe was saved with scarely a scratch--a knot on the log elevating it so as to pass over the babe without hardly touching it. tr:7-A I.IARRYI G MAN.-A few days ago Judge Perrin, of this city, married a man for the fifth time. A singular feature in the case is that the fifth wife was also the third wife. The third marriage •not proving a happy one, the third parties were separated and were di vorced. The man married again, and when death claimed his fourth wife, the disconsolate widower returned to No. 3, and wooed and won her. Judge Perrin thinks he has tied them up effectually this time. The lucky man had the impudence to claim a reduction of the marriage fee in consequence of the large busi- ness he was doing is that line.—Covington Journal. O:7UNOLE SAM'S PUNDS.—The United States Treasurer reports the net amount subject to draft on the 24th of March, $2,372,285. • [I:7CLOSE CALCULATI9N.-A SD:Gut/in CASE. —A man seventy-three years of age recently died in the Indiana penitentiary, of an affection of the heart. He was a miser, was incarcera ted for a forgery of $25, and has left a fortune of $lOO,OOO. He denied himself the smallest luxury beyond the prison fare, and at the time of his arrest he was tendered counsel, who pledged themselves to clear him of the charge for the fee of $5OO. To this the old man re plied, that "if convicted the sentence would only be for two years. and he didn't think he could make his expenses and two hundred and fifty dollars a year out of the penitentiary, and it would cost him nothing to live there,"and he would save that much anyhow'!" . ID-A TERRIBLE LEAP—CLEAR ORIT.—We learn that one of the workmen fell from the Rock Island Railroad Bridge last week, a dis tance of fifty-two feet. A large stick of timber fell at the same time, and from the same place. Tho ice being rotten, both the stick of timber and the man went through together, and the men on the bridge stood aghast, expecting to see their comrade no more. But in a twinkling he scrambled out on the ice, and, with clenched fists and significant gestures, commenced swear ing terribly at some ono fur pushing him off the bridge. Barring the cool bath he had received, he was none the worse of his fearful adventure. —Chicagio Press. I[l:7A MAN wan NINE WIVES.--Wo clip the following from the Hamilton (Ohio) Intelligen ce r : The notorious Nathan Brown, the most re• markable bigamist ever known in America, was brought by officer Ellett, the other day, from near Jeffersonville, Indiana, under a requisition from. Governor Chase. He is reputed to have nine living wives ! His practice has been to live with each about three months, get hold of their property, and desert them: He is now safe in Butler county . jail, at the instance of his seventh wife, a resident of this city. The old sinner is fifty-three years of age, and has married three wives within two years. 0:71LLINOIS AND MUNIIGAN CANAL-CORN IN EGYPT.—Tho La Salle Press, of tho 16th, states that tho canal and steamboat basins at that place, have, been closely picked with loaded boats; part of which received their cargo iit, La Salle, part .at Peru, Peoria, and other places on the Illinois river, and some at St. Louis—all awaiting the opening of the canal. EPILEPSY, OR FALLING FITS We believe wo cannot do our readers a more import ant service, than by again calling their attention to that most remarkable preparation, discovered by Dr. Seth S. Hance. of Baltimore, hid., which possesses the power of alleviating and curing that horrid visi tation of man--Epilepsy, or Fulling Fits. In recom mending this preparation to our renders, wo do so with a conviction that we are not degrading our I'ol - to puff a common patent tnedicine, but are plac ing before them a discovery, which, if fully known, would probably . do more to alleviate human suffering, than any invention of modern times. Dr. Hance, in asking us to notice his preparation favorably in our editorial department, has sent us for perusal a number of letters front persons who have used his Pills, and have been cured thereby. All of them speak iu the most grateful and eulogistic terms. One great ad vantage this medicine possesses is the fact, that it can be transported through the mils, thereby afford ing every one an opportunity of dealing directly with the inventor, and also precluding all possibility of being imposed on by n counterfeit or spurious imi tation. Dr. Hance pays the postage on his Pills to any part of the couutry,.nnd will forward them by re turn of mail, on the receipt of a remittance. His prices are as follows: One box, $3; two do., $.5. "Non To WITOM HONOR. is Dart."—The great number of personk in all parts of the coun try who have experienced the. health-restoring and blood-purifying effects of Carter's Spanish Mixture in curing many of the worst forms of Scrofula, Rheumatism, and all diseases arising from impurity of the blood, has created a de mand for it which is alike gratifying to pro• prietors and patients. Among the thousand medicines which profess to cure all the diseas es with which mankind is afflicted, Carter's Spanish Mixture stands like a monument, a " giant among pigmies," and all owing to the simple fact that it does really possess properties found in no other, and cures by its specific pow er over the blood ; expelling from that a great scat of life all impurities of lurking disease, opening the secretions, acting gently on the Liver, and in fact, adding and assisting nature to collect her energies ; thus giving strength and vigor in• stead of weakness and debility. The trial of a single bottle will bear us out in all we say of this valuable remedy. Allentown, April 28th, 1850. The long ngnny is over. Peace is once more re stored on the continent of Europe.
