REPUBLICAN Cotivtamort.—The Republican State Convention, assiimbled at Pittsburg, Pa., on 'Wednesday of last week. There were about 3000 persons in attendance from different parts of the State. After a preliminary organization, a Cothmitteo on officers was appointed, who re ported the lion. Wm. Jessup, of Susquehanna, for President, with the usual number of Vice Presidents and Secretaries. The Committee appointed for that purpose, reported a series of resolutions opposed to the aggressions of Slave- , ry, assuming that the question overshadows all others ; declaring that freedom is National and Slavery Sectional, and condemning the repeal of the. Missouri Compromise. The resolutions were adopted by aCclamationt, No side istates were introdlided. After the adoption of the res olutions the Convention was addressed by T. J. Bingham, of Allegheny, and Hon. Joshua Gid dings, Meinber of Congress from Ohio. After which, Passmore Williamson was nominated for Canal Commissioner, amid great enthusi asm. The resolutions adopted declare that— The President of the United States and the political party which sustains him have endea vored to overthrow the principles of civil liberty proclaimed by our Revolutionary fathers, by 'extending the bounds of slavery into territories expressly consecrated to Freedom by a solemn compromise, and by obtaining territory of Mexico for the purpose of *eliding the wither ing curse of human bondage, and by endeavor ing to involve us in war with Spain for the ac quisition of Cuba, with the intention of per petuating and strengthening the institution of slavery, and by sustaining the slave trade on our coast. They call upon the North to unite and resist the aggressions of slavery, declare that the Republican party is in favor of the re peal of the Fugitive Slave Law, because it vir : tually suspends the sacred writ of habeas corpus, and takes away the right of trial by jury, and that the imprisonment, without trial, of citizens of free States by the Federal Judiciary, is a bold invasion of personal liberty, a violation of the guaranteed rights of States, and an assump tion of federal power that should be resisted determinedly by every friend of personal and civil liberty. A BArrr ELSI'ItANT.—One of the female ele phants belonging to Bxnxuat's travelling Me nagerie has recently given birth to nn infant, thus disproving the assertions of Buflbn and Goldsmith that these animals never gestate while in the state of captivity. The New York Sunday Times says the one in question is per fectly formed, and differs from its parent only in size, but that differrnce is so amazing that it becomes ludicrous, and when one sees the " baby" walking to and fro under its mother, the impulse cannot be restrained to laugh at the oddity of the. comparison. The bulky mother's care of her " baby" is described as ex tremely human-like and affectionate. If an ap ple, for instance, is given° the latter, the another takes it in her trunk, examines it closely, and then, as if satisfied of its harmless ness, returns it to her infant to eat. A SENSIBLE INDIAN.—An Indian passing through the woods one day, stopped before a man who was chopping wood, and surveyed him with gravity. lie remarked, that every time the man brought his axe to the log he sent forth a sound somewhat like " ugh," as if that was part of the operation. " Why you speak em ugh when you bring your axe down ?" said ho. The man laughed. " Oh, it makes me chop faster." "Ah ! does it ? Why you no say ugh when you take hint up, then you chop twice so fast !" FLOUR MILLS AT OW EGO, N. Y.—There arc 16 flouring mills, with 84 run of stone, capable of manufacturing abort 10,000 barrels of flour per day at Oswego, N. Y. There is perhaps no point in the United States or in the world, where the manufacture of flour is conducted upon so large a scale as in Oswego. The facil ities for handling grain arc extensive ; the ele vating capacity about 36,000 barrels per hour, and the storage room equal to about two mil li°u tvee himived thousand bushels. COOL WEATHER—On Mount Washington, the highest peak of the White Mountains in New Hampshire, a young lady is reported to have frozen her face on the 17th of August.— Ice formdk there that morning to considerable thickness. • On the same day at Quebec, the at mosphere was dear and dry, and sheltered from the wind it was pretty comfortable : but thick woolen shawls and overcoats were the rule, not the exception. • Bairrer. Otrriticz.—A fiend in human shape named John Saffron, a German stone inasoilire siding in Afuhlenberg township, Barks county, while engaged. in ploughing, a few days ago, in a fit of passion at his horse, took out his knife and cut open the jaws of the poor animal and then cut out its tongue by the roots. He after wards turned the horse into the woods near by, where it lingered until shot by a neighbor. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Sal C ron to answer for the fiendish net. A JEWEL OF Alf ACTRESS.—The New. York Tribune states that the jewels worn by Rachel, in the character of Adrienne, are vOlued at $245,000. The greater part of them were the gifts of the sovereigns and of cities in which she has performed. • • • . Allentown Bank Stocks, THE undersigned pay the highest price for stock of the .
