TEILUZLIC AFFRAY.—New Orleans papers
bring us an account of a terrible and fatal af
fray in that city. Two men named Harrison
and Duffy, got into a quarrel on account of one
having given important testimony against the
other in a case tried two years ago, and finally
drew a pistol.and fired at Duffy, who fled into
the billiard room of the St. Charles . Hotel.
Harrison pursued him, fired his revolver, and
finally hit him with ,. two shots, which killed
him. But while the chase was going' on in the
billiard room, Duffy finding himself too hotly
pursued, drew his pistol and fired it over his
shoulder backwards, thinking to hit llarrison.
The ball struck a spectator named Dr. Parsons,
and killed him.
BACHELOR ODDITIES.—The Methodist Advo
cate tells the following story :
Some years ago, a rich old bachelor died in
this city, leaving behind him two dogs. In his
will he bequeathed the dogs to a pati.Qular
friend, and left $2OOO to be appropriated to
their maintainance and buried. The other is
still living, though far advanced in age. Half
of the money has been drawn, the other half
will be paid over as soon as the living dog be
comes a dead one and is decently buried. The
(logs were to be, and will be according to the
will, buried one at his head, the other at his
feet.
POWDER FOR TILE CRIMEA.- The Powder Mills
of the Messrs. DuPont, the largest in the world,
situated three miles from the city of Wilming
ton, Del., on the Brandywine, are now, and
have been for some time, making powder for
the French army in the Crimea. An explosion
occurred at one of these mills on Tuesday morn
ing. No one was in the mill at the time. It
sounded like an earthquake, end shook the
ground with a low rumbling noise. Terrific
explosions and greet loss of life are frequently
occurring at these mills.
A Sx.tkii SThay.—ln Albany, a snake fanci

His snakeship toyed with the mouse, then
swallowed him whole, and coiled up to digest
him at leisure. But Mr- Mouse would not
give it up so. He got down most to the tail,
and ate out ! Snake swallowed hint again, and
mouse ate out again, and so they kept it a go.
ing till the process cf swallowing and eating
out had been performed IT times ! when both
parties gave out and died. It was a drawn
battle,--hokh conquered, both dial. It is 'a
great story. 1:!oRt. the Albany paper gives names

- CRANBERRIES AN Esystri:Les.—The Niles
(Michigan) Republic says : " A lady visited
our fluoily a few days since, and stated that
her daughteihad the erysipelas very had. We
called to mind the remedy recommended by a
New Haven editor. On returning home in the
evening she found the disease spreading very
rapidly, It had assumed a frightful appear

of cranberries, which seem to arrest it at once,
and the second poultice eft*ected a complete
cure.",

' , Alabama we re visited by snow and frost; and
thOugh the fruit trees were generally in blos

a number of years previous. .
TOR PEACH Cnor.—A writer in the Ononda
ga Gazette (N. Y.) says he is confident we shall
not have fifty bushels of peaches in Onondaga
this season. Out or several scores of buds he

beyond a question be plenty.
