PENNSYLVANIA NEWS.
VENANGO COUNTY.—The branch line of the At
lantic and Great Western railroad is completed
from Meadville to Franklin. The first locomotive
which ever entered the county was to make its ap
pearanee on Saturday, May 27th.
A company is being formed to erect a telegraph
line from Franklin to Tyrone.
Col. James K. Kerr, lately commanding the
Fourth Pennsylvania cavalry, has resigned his
commission on account of ill health.
The Democracy of the county bold a 'grand
mass meeting at Franklin, on Tuesday, Jane 9th.
It will be addressed by Hon. William H. Witte,
Hon. & A. Gilmore, and others.
Democratic clubs have bean formed throughout
th e enti ty, and weekly meetings are held in all
the townships.
Cams Cottarv.—The extreme drought for a
Week or two past has completely parched the moun
tain forests, and a letter from Penn's Valley says
that an immense conflagration is now raging en
what is known as "Seven Mountains "resulting In
great doetruetion of property and interrupting
travel. The Bellefontaine and Lewistown railroad
is unable to perform its daily trips.
YORK Corwrv.—Mr. William Klinefelter, of
-- Shrewsbury township, met with a severe accident
a day or two since at the Northern Central rail
road depot. It appears that whilst endeavoring
to step from one of the cars on to the tender, he
fell between them, the wheels passing over his
right foot and hand, smashing them in a terrible
mummer. But the most dangerous part injured
was his head and jaw, the latter being completely
STI/ 56 a to pieces.
On Wednesday morning last Family Conley, an
employee of the railroad company, received a se
versi internal injury by falling heavily upru a pile
of iron.
Amos Underwood, of York, had his right foot
painfully injured last Saturday by the wheels o f
the Laurel fire engine passing over it.
Miss Mary Smith, a daughter of Mr. William
Smith, druggist, aged about nine years, met with
a very serious accident by falling from the hay
loft of Dr. Roland's stable, one day last week,
whilst at play with some of her companions. Her
injuries are about the head, and she still lies in a
very precarious condition.
Mr. Henry Mundell; a survivor of the noble
band who marched to Baltimore from York in
1814, to repel the British invasion, died in that
place 'on Friday last, aged 82 years.
The portion of the - 136th regiment from the
borough of York and - vicinity arrived there about
four o'clock on Saturday afternoon, and were re
ceived in , a becoming manner.
Mtsctimintous.—The Democracy of Clarion
county have instructed their delegate, Hon. C. L.
LambevMD, to vote for Clymer.
The quantity of anthracite iron mails in Penn
sylvania, east of the mountains, daring the year
1862,:is awed at 381,448 tons, against 310,000
tons for 1881.
• Mrs. Catharine Smith, aged 93, one of the oldest
residents of Lanoister, died in that city on the
25tb,
At a Democratic male convention, held at Ridg
way, Elk county, Dr. C. R. Early, of Elk county,.
was reoomtnended for Senatorial delegate, and T.
Jetraison Boyer, of Clearfield, and Seth A. Backus,
of Mims, as Representative delegates, to the
State Convention in June.
The 126th regiment of returning nine months'
men was a grand reception at Chambetibtirg on
Saturday last.
On Sunday, the 17th inat , the dwelling house
and barn of Mr. James Spencer, of White town
ship, Indiana county, were totally consumed by
ere. His loss is over $l,OOO.
At a county meeting of the Democracy of Snyder
county, bold aU Middleburg, on the 20th instant
speeonvit were made by Messrs. Zeigler and Purdy,
of that county, and Hon. Wm. H. Witte. of Mont
gomery. A resolution instructing the . delegate
(Maj Jack Cummings) to vote in the State Con
volition for Mr. Witte for Governor was unani
mously 'adopted.
A Pens"lvanis girl, who has been serving as a
soldier in the Army of the West for ten months,
says she has discovered A great many females
among the soldiers, one of whom is now a lieuten
ant. She has assisted in burying three female
soldiete at diff,rent times, whose sex was unknown
to any but herself.
A cow belonging to Mr. Moses 13. Miller, of
Windsor township, Bergs county, gave birth
recently to four calves. Two of them were dead
but the other two are strong and healthy.
The Democratic editors of the State are reapeet
fully invited to attend in Harrisburg, on Wednes
day, the I?th of June. Business of importance
will be submitted.
