MISCELLANY. A Finnicir AMAZON.—The Daughters of the Regiment, who swing the flags and canteens so gaily to the music of their own youthful songs, become in time Amazons, if we may be 'Beim the stubborn facts narrated in the Moue"- kur. Witness the adventures of Marie Du gan]: She was married at the age of' seventeen, and served in the campaigns or Milan, - Program, Borodino, Moscow, Beresina, and Srriolensko. Her biography is given in the petition which she presented to the President of the Republic in 1850: "Prince: Encouraged by the kind and gracious reception you gave me in 1849, I again come to present you the homage of one whose life has been consecrated to the service of your uncle. In 1802 I united my fortunes to those of Nicholas Beaudot, 'a soldier of the Fourth Regiment of Cavalry, and subsequently overseer of ambulance service in Prince Eu gene's corps d'armee. I was successively one of the garrison of Lyons in 1802, of 'Milan in 1803, and of Udine in 1805. To follow my husband I disguised myself as a soldier, and served in the ranks under the name of Maurice. Before Raab I afforded succor and distributed soup to two hundred and eighty-seven wounded. Being remarked by Prince Eugene, I revealed to him the secret of my disguise, and, in re turn, had the honor of being complimented by his mouth. At Wagram I extinguished a fire that tortured the wounded who were lying about the plain, and that threatened to burn up the gathered harvest. After the battle I remained in an isle in the Danube, where the ambulance corps was stationed; from thence I returned to Udine, where I remained till 1812, when I took part in the campaign of that year, and served in every battle where the 4th corps de la grand armee wrs ordered. I was at Smo lensk°, at Borodino : I was at Moscow, and even beyond it. During the retreat I shared in all the dangers of the first attack of the Cossacks. Under the fire of the enemy' I passed the Beresina upon a block of ice. Be fore Wilma, on the 10th of November, I received seven lance wounds, and fainted in the arms of my husband, who was also wounded. Under cover of night we dragged ourselves to the rampart, and entered the town through a sewer. When we came to Gloganlrey husband sank under his wounds. Prince Eugene, with his own ears, heard-my cries of despair. Remem bering the care which I took of the 287 wounded at Raab, he had the goodness to send Ida aid-de-camp to me with the assurance that le' would always takes care of me; but, fright ened with- my misfortunes alone, and plunged in -sorrow, I only deManded to be carried to Strasburg, where I quitted the soldier's 11,bit. -abandoning, in my precipitation, three months' pay. Returned home, I brought nothing but a premature old age. I dare assert, with the pride of a soldier, that I am a wreck of the great army, and by virtue of this title I hope. Prince, to share in your accustomed liberality." THE PRINCESS OF THE 'BRINE.—A writer whose.respect for certain classes of the commu nity is rather limited, treats of the Princess of the Rhine in an amusing manner—having especial reference to Teutonic old maids I may panse to consider bow old maids come to2be in this blessed realm. Thereissomething, first of all, in the Teutonic race, because, though by no means common there, old maids are found in Germany. They there take one of two forms. In the neighborhood of the universities, and in scientific circles, we find a few excellent women living under the protection of their brothers, who are invariably professors of some sort. These Frauhen, born in blue, and in an odor of mingled philosophy and tobacco smoke, are transcendentally snirituat They write poetry of the ecstatic, and prose of the costive school, and correspond with the Schillars, Goethes, and Ilumboldts of their day. They have sometimes been lovely (after the German model) in youth, bet all trace of their spring blossom is lost in a sear (and not over-clean) autumnal decay. They are utterly regardless of dress, andread a great deal of English litera ture -in the Tauchnitz edition. They have generally a deficiency of hair; but wear no caps. They attend the lectures at the university with note-books, and talk a good deal of aesthetics in the evening. The other class of German old maids consists of the maids of honor. Every small princess (and their name is legion in Germany) has one or more 17ofthime about her. They are gene rally very poor and very spiky, but of terrible old family, and a distant connection with roy alty of some kind. Sometimes they take to English and mstketics—sometimes to French and freedom of morals. The former class are forever raving about scenery, draw a little, live on the crumbs of the . ducal table, and toady everybody. The lady of the latter class, far . less respectable, forms small coteries of her own, plays rival to the married women, and circulates all the gossip that the miniature court of Dunsinkopf-Tollhousen can give rise to. THE FAMINE IN IxDrA.—The famine in India. is spoken of by foreign journals:as unparalleled in extent, and probably in intensity; though as yet the information received is very imperfect. The latest accounts represent the distress as increasing. It prevailed through out the North western provinces, where some 400 or 500 per sons were d) ing every day; and even in the. Southern extremity of the peninsula, famine and pestil, nce spread desolation in many vil lages. This deplorable condition of things is • attributed to drought. Fron time immemorial, India has been subject to visitations of this •kind, but their effects have been mitigated by the general introduction of systems of artificial irrigation. Extensive works were erected in former years for the creation of reservoirs of water which might be distributed in small streams through those parts of the country chiefly devoted to agriculture. Of late years, however, owing to the rebellion among the natives and other civil disturbances, these works have been suffered to go to ruin. Im mense tracts of land formerly peopled by flour ishing communities, have consequently become barren .wastes. From the peculiarity of the soil, cultivation becomes impossible in India, if rain is lon; suspended. The surface is baked to stony hardness; vegetation ceases; and labor is uselessly expended. But on - the recurrence of rain, the earth becomes covered with verdure with surprising rapidity. London•papers evince much disposition to blame the Government for not having taken measures to provide against a calamity which was clearly foreseen. No rain fell last season, ;rendering it certain that the crops must fail. As the means of trans portation are very inadequate, fear is expressed that with all the exertions which may be put forth by Europeans and opulent natives of Bombay and Madras, the next three or four mont h s wilkwitness terrible suffering. Marketfiehi street. His stock of Schnapps on hand ready for shipment could not have been less than thirty thousand cases; the Brandy, some ten thousand cases—Vintages of 1806 to 1850; and ten thousand cases of Madeira, Sherry and Port Wines, Scotch and Irish Whisky, Jamaica and St. Croix Rum, some very old and equal to any in this country. Ile also had three large cellars, filled with Brandy, Wines, &c. in casks, under Custom-House key, ready for bottling. Mr. WOLFE'S sales of Schnapps last year amounted to one hundred and eighty thousand dozen, and we hope in less than two years he may be equally succeed with his Brandies and Wines. . . ' His business merits the Ratronage of every lover of his species. Private families who wish pure Wines and Liquors for medical use should send their orders direct to Mr. WOLF; until every Apothecary in the land make up their minds to . discard the poisonous stuff from their shelves, and replace it with WOLFS'S pure WmEs and LIQUORS. We understand Mr. WOLFS, for the accommodation of small dealers in the country, puts up assorted cases of Wines and Liquors. Such , a man, and such a merchant, should be sustained against his tens of thousands of op ponents in the United States, who sell nothing but fad tations, ruinous alike to human health and happiness.
