J. Jones, Jas. W. Weir, of Harrisburg ; Jay Cooke, Clarence H. Clark, of Philadelphia ; E. R. Riddle, New York ; Geo. W. Brewer, Chambersburg ; G. W. Zeigler, A. B. Wingerd, J. C. Austin, of Greencastle ; A. Armstrong and Jas. Watson, of Hagerstown. CABS IN MAKING BANDAGSS.-A private letter from St. Louis impresses the necessity of care in the making up bandages for hospital use : "They should be made two inches wide, from six to ten yards long, and every bandage should be pinned at the end and not sewed, one or two pins being always needed by the surgeon for fastening the bandage. New cotton should always be shrunk before being used for that urpose.' ' I=3=!l RELIEF FOR THE SICK AND WOUNDED.—The contributions for the relief of the sick and wounded soldiers in the hospitals at Baltimore and Fortress Monroe, continue to arrive at the depository, (Wm. S. Shaffer's store, Market square,) in quantities that speak volumes for the benevolence and patriotism of our citizens. From present indications, the contributions from this city will fill a la , ge sized car. Those of our citizens who desire to add to this collec tion are requested to bring their contributions to the depository, to morrow forenoon, the goods will be shipped to their destination, to morrow afternoon. •• GrvE Him His Due.—Mr. Cowes, of the Patent office, Washington, states that Thomas Gregg, of Collinsvil.e, Pennsylvania, is undoubtedly the inventor of metallic defensive armor for ships. He had a 11, tent issued to him in 1814, and he describes in his specification a vessel with angular sides " all around," covered by a deck to glance the projectiles of an enemy upward, while the shot, striking below the apex of the angle, will be glanced downward. The angula ted system of shipbuilding, as exhibited in the Merrimac, and the frigate recently launched at Philadelphia, is claimed to be invented by Josiah Jones, of the British Navy, as late as 1859. Mr. Gregg invented this a half century before. So of metallic shields ; Mr. Gra gg's vessel was "to be coppered or covered with iron.—Pitts bury Chronicle. The Thomas Gregg mentioned in the above paragraph was the father of Messrs. John and William Gregg, both Methodist ministers, the former stationed at Bainbridge, and the latter in this city. Mr. John Gregg, a few days since, submitted to our inspection a copy of the ori ginal drawing, made by hill father in 1814, of the proposed gun-boat, and we were particular ly struck with the striking resemblance it bears to the pictures, representing the rebel gun boat Merrimac. We understand it is the in• tention of Mr. Gregg, to procure from the Patent office, at Washington, certified copies of the caveat of his father's invention, after which a representation of it will appear in one of the illustrated papers. I=l==l OUR ROLL or HONOR.—While the summons to aims was stirring the people of Harrisburg to enthusiasm, and while the streets yesterday were filled with recruits, all hurrying to their various head quarters, the men in the TELE GRAPH composing room were determined not to be left in the rear by their fellow-citizens. A proposition was made to join one of the local companies, when the following men at once proceeded to enroll themselves as members of the First City Zouaves. Levi R. Patterson, Ben j. E. Dailey, Henry C. Dimming, George W. Bence, .77ioinas Forster. Added to these printer recruits, two of our legislative reporters, Joseph I. Gilbert and George W. Fenn, attached themselves to the same company, and are all now awaiting march ing orders. This is a noble roll of honor, composing men of intelligence and courage, and equal to that which can be found among the same number of men enlisting in any part of the Common wealth. They go with our blessing and pray ers, and when they return, which God in his mercy grant, the proprietor of the TELEGRAM will find welcome and employment for every man What other printing office in the State can do better than the TELEGRAPH ? =I Tag MILITARY FIRE burns brightly in the city, and the souls of our young men aro in arms. The First City Zouaves, Captain Awl, filled up the full complement of their number before noon yesterday, and might have had many more men. They were mustered into the IJ. S. service, at 1 o'clock this afternoon, and will probably leave for Washington city, to-morrow morning, all fully aimed and ac coutred. The Zouaves are a fine body of young men, well officered, and we expect to hear good accounts of them. The "Russell Guards," started by the mem bers of the Hope fire company, are rapidly fill ing up, and we should not be surprised to learn that the company was nearly full by this even ing. They hang out their flag at the Hope fire company's house, in North Second street, where active young men will find the roll. In addition to the above two companies, Capt. John J. Ball, late one of the drill masters at Camp Curtin, has raised his flag for recruits, and is meeting with the most encouraging success. He is an excellent military officer, capable of bringing a company to a fine state o perfection in drill and discipline. Captain Ball can be beard of at the Exchange, Walnut street. We observe, also, by a notice in another col umn of this evening's TELEGRAPH, that a meeting of those wishing to form another company, will be held at Brant's Hall, to-night. The call will, no doubt, meet with a favorable response. RUSSELL GUARD, oP HARRISBURG.—AII persons wishing to join this fine company, now being organized, are requested to meet at the Hope hose house, this (Tuesday) evening, at 71 o'clock. By order. I=l=l A STATED MEETING of Washington Lodge, No. 1, I. G. of Good Templar's, will he held at the hall, Sons of Temperance building, cor ner of Second and South streets, at 8 o'clock this .evening. FOR THREE lifowrns.—Those wishing to con nect themselves with a volunteer company during the time required by the proclamation. of Gov. A. G. Curtin, (three months) will meet at Brant's Hall, this evening at 7,1 o'clock. Entrance opposite Poulton'e billiard saloon =l= GRAND COMMANDERY OF PRRNSYLVANlA.—Ar rangements have been made for the issue of excursion tickets on all the railroads leading to Easton, for the use of the delegates to the next annual conclave of the Grand Commandery of Pennsylvania, to be held in Easton on the sec ond Tuesday of June. SERIOUSLt —Ms. Wm. H. Callow, was seriously injured this afternoon about two o'clock, on the Pennsylvania railroad, whilst he was engaged in coupling cars. It is feared that the collar bone was broken and that he is also injured internally. He was conveyed to his residence in this city in an express wagon. Trigs ARE COMING —About twenty cars filled with troops, comprising the famous New York Seventh Regiment, passed through here at noon to-day, via the LAianon Valley and Nor thern Central Railroad,en route for Washington. They are only the van guard of the hundreds of thousands of sturdy freemen of the North who are preparing to move in response to the recent call of the President. DIM FROM THE INJURIES.-Mr. Jacob Enlps wilier, an employee of the Northern Central railroad company, who was injured a short time since on the railroad between Bridgeport and Marysville, died of his' injuries on Thursday, the 16th inst. One of his lege was amputated just above the ankle, and though every care and precaution were taken, mortification took place, and caused his death. He leaves a wife and family, BEIGES COUNTY AGAIN IN VIE FIELD.—COIOneI Young, Capt. Nagle and Lieut. Pauli arrived in this city this morning from Reading and immediately waited on the Governor, offering the service of one thousand men from I3erks county. A large and spirited meeting was held yesterday evening, upon the receipt of the news that General Banks had been com pelled to retreat, at which JOEL B. WARNER, Mayor of the city, presided. Old Berks has already a large number of men in the field, but the rebels will discover very soon that a few more are left to crush their unholy designs. ELEOTION or OFFICERS. —At a meeting of the First City Zotiaves, held at their armory in the Exchange, last evening, the following officers were elected : Captain—P. Asbury Awl. First Lieutenant— John S. Bitzer Second Lieutenant—John T. Ensminger. Captain Awl served with distinction in the 1 three month's campaign, as Adjutant of the 11th Pennsylvania regiment, and faced the rebels at the battle of Falling Waters. Lieutenant Ensminger was also connected with the three month's campaign, and served under Captain McCormick, of the Lochiel Greys. ' Lieutenant Bitzer has been connected with the Zouaves for some time and will make an efficient officer. I== JONES—Shattered, inebriated, and filthy Jones—who controls the local columns of that common conductor of filth and offal, the Patriot and Union—indulges in one of his usual misrepresentations this morning to hiss on a repetition of the attack made on the local re porter of this paper yesterday. It is a matter of small consequence to the people of Harris burg whether we were worsted in a personal encounter,or whether we are able to defend our person from attack ; but it is of importance that the public should know that this poor wretch is licensed to emit his bitter spleen on all subjects through the columns of a sheet that is daily beseeching that public for support and countenance. For his vices and excesses, brutal, loathsome and infectious though they are, we can mingle our disgust with the comi mon pity that fallen humanity ever deserves— but for his dastardly meanness and perversions, we have no patience or pity, nor language suf ficient to express ourabhorrence and contempt. He is a liar by plain, simple, unadulterated practice—a cowardly whelp—a boasting tradu cer, because he imagines the decrepitude of a body which his besotted life still animates, security from the chastisement of honorable men. And he is right—so we dismiss him. Mn. AND MBE. PEABODY AT HOBE.—This new, elegant and most amusing entertainment, which was given at Sanford's Opera House for the first time last evening, was a decided suc cess, though the house was not as full as we could have desired. The diversity of the char acters represented, and the rapidity with which the changes Were made, elicited the admiration of all present. To point out any specialities where all is so excellent would be difficult ; but we may mention particularly Mrs. P's. two beautiful patriotic recitations, " The Volun teer's Wife," and "Scott and the Veteran," (most appropriate at the present time,) as also her personations of ,the French Washerwoman, the Overgrown Child, and the Dwarf Prima Donna. Mr. Peabody's imitation of Barnum, the great showman, and his story of the Cherry Colored Cat, was capital. His new patriotic song "Come rally boys around our flag," should be sung by everybody, whilst his sneezing song is a perfect roar. Our readers should remem ber that this and to-morrow, (Wednesday,) evenings are the lash opportunities they will have of seeing " Mr. and Mrs. Peabody at Home."
