SECOND OF FEBRIJA.BY. —Last evening the
various Army officers stationed at thie post,
assembled in, the spacious dining-room of the
Jones -Haase, for the purpose of Partaking of
a banquet in honor of the Birthday of \ the
Father of his Country, the Immortal Wash

After the cloth was removed,Major.General

The lifetnory.of George Washington.
At the mention of that magic name, the
guests arose, and amid much solemnity, if

The next toast in order was= v. •

Amid much enthusiasm, Governor Curtin
rose to reply to this sentiment. He said the
loyalty of the people of Pennsylvania was of a
character 'which did not need the endorsement
of any man, be he an official in high station or
a plain private citizen. That loyalty had at
tested itself where , the battle raged and car

measures in its 'service of the Government.
During the awful crisis through which We have
been the pebrole'd State 'air the
faithful Commonwealths in the 'Union, had
been more prompt in their support of the Na

the Government needed a soldier. They had
perilled their lives wherever freedom required
a defence—on the land and the sea—above the
clouds of the mountain., in the valleys ; and the
prairies—wherever and whenever, duty called
to arms, there the flag of the old . Keystone

to arms with more enthusiasm and alacrity
than when the first blow of the attack on Fort

of treason.. This vas the loyalty of Penn.syl

which all true Pennsylvanians comprehended.
It is -the 'loyalty which springs from brave
hearts and brawny arms. The loyalty of a

be otherwise than inspiring,. .As we honor the

The LONDON TJMPS, in speaking of this great moral
drama, mentions a fact to which the Provincial Press of
Great Britian and Ireland has given cimfirmation.- .•
A clerk, who had absconded from Liverpool Atli' £2,-
600 the property of his employers, and after visiting many
places arrived at Birmingham, about five o'clock, and
after taking some refresiuments, went to the theatre, to
while away an hour. As it happenad, the piece which
was being performed on the occasion of this visit was
THE TICKET-OF-LEAVE-MAY,
and the guilty man seems to have- drawn a moral from
the representation; for when the scene in the interview
between Hackshaw, the detective, and the " Ticket-of
Leave Han" took place, Parker, the clerk, became so af
fected that he went out of the theatre, got throe envel
opes, and. sant £1,500 back to his employers.
Oh! the prophetic vision of Shakespeare. • •
"I have heard
That guilty creatures sitting at a play
Have by the very cunning of the scene,
Been struck so to the soul, that presently • ,
They have proclaimed their malefactions."
