WALKER JACKSON on Andrew Jac kson . —Our friends will of course not forget to be present in the Locust street*. E. Church, to morro w evening, to hear Rev. J. Walker Jack son pronounce his lecture on Andrew Jackson. The object of the lecture is to raise a certain sum of money to liquidate what debt yet re• mains on the Ridge Avenue M. E. Church.— Put the great interest in the lecture is the sub ject selected. At this period in the history of the Sepublic, the name and the character of Andrew Jackson cannot be too frequently dis cussed. There is a talismanic infigence in the name of " Jackson" against the caS.se of treason, audit that name was inscribed upon our banners, with the immortal words, "Br THE ETERNAL, THE 17N1OtT MUST AND SHALL BE PRE SERVED," we have a notion that more than one traitor would tremble and quail from his work of treason But this has nothing to do with the lecture of Rev. J. Walker Jackson.— From what the people of the State Capital al ready know of the ability of Rev. Jacks-n— -from what we know of his straightforward loy alty, his intrepid independence and the outspo ken zeal with whioh he ever defends the right, we are ltd to anticipate something above the common order of lectures, something which will be a credit to our cause and a reflex of the faithful records of history. We•adlrit.7e all who can to ha present on the occasion. • POUCH AFFAIRS—Kefore Aldernan Kline.— A. brick-layer named John Stevenson, charged with assault and battery on Ellis R. Williams, Bawl.tor notiao,) was arrested by Chief-of-Police Campbell. Williams was walking back of the Capitol, near'the corner of Fourth and State streets, at a late hour on Sat urday night. Stevenson met him and sent a brick at his head, which stunned him consid erably, and then endeavered to pick his pocket, but failed. The same evening, and ptevious to the above occurrence, Stevenson assaulted To -1 bias Faster with a hatchet, and came near cutting a hole in his head. The Alderman Saw proper to commit him to jail for trial. A very excellent decision. David Stevens, a colored boy who is employ ed at the Buehler House, was taken before the Alderman on suspicion of having taken two pocket books from, John Clemens, who is em-, ployed at the earns Howse. There was no positive evidence in this case. Steinke, who Is naturally hard to rouse when asleep, was up at an unseasonable hour yesterday morning.— This led Clemens to suspect him of the theft,. as the pocket books disappeared during the night. David was committed for a further hearing. George Roach, a resident of Filbert street, drew a pistol on officer Campbell, as the latter was going home at a late hour on Saturday night. Roach was drunk, and his' conduct was outrageous. When sPoken to by Barney, George presented a loaded pistol at the head of the former, and threatened to blow oat his brains. Barney seized George's wrist, and turned the pistol in another direction. A ae'ghbor ar riving, assisted the officer, when the pistol was secured, and the offender arrested. The Alder ipan committed him to prison for three days. Hugh H. Smith, a soldier, bad a "load" on, Saturday night, and his brains being somewhat 'muddled, he flourished - a knife in a very bad style, endangering the persons of those within his reach. Officer Kane thought he was a fit subject for the lock up, and he was furnished with quarters in that institution. He was dis charged, yesterday morning, after paying a fine. Patrick Markley and John Molby, who were placed in the lock-up on Saturday afterro-on, for drunkenness, attempted to "leave their bed and ,board," by" digging a hole through the wall of the. building. They had nearly sue melted before bebig discovered. They were committed for three days for the offence. The following drunks were discharged from the lock-up yesterday morning; Hugh H. Smith, arnsted-by Kalifs ; George 024,11agher, arrested, by Massey ; Edward Stoner, arrested by Costel to ; Jacob Waller, arrested by Essig ; John Roney, arrested by Loyd; Henry Herr, arrested by Essig. - - . . Joseph Thema, a vagrant, was furtashed with lodging in,the prison, lad night When inter rogated by the Alderman, as to where he was from, &c., he replied ~that he was from the galtimoye penitentiary, and was on his way to' the East Indies. He was supposed to be 'par thaly insane, and was discharged this morning. PENNSYLVANIA. LAND'S Gentian Bitters" will cure nine-tenths of the diseases induced by exposures and privations incident to camp life. Every case of that kind can be readily cured by Houtland's German Bitters. Diseases resulting from disorders of the digestive organs are speedily removed. We have ne hesitation in stating that if these Bitters were freely used among our soldiers, hundreds of lives might be saved thatotherwise will be lost. We call particular attention to thu following remarkable and well authenticated •cure of one of tbe nation's heroes, whose life, to use his own language, "has been saved by the Bitters:" Pamanittana, August 23d, 1862. Mem, Jonea & Evans:—V l l ell, gentlemen, your Ifoofiand's German Bitters has saved my life. There is no mistake in this. 'lt is vouch ed for by numbers of my comrades, some of whew names are appended, and who were fully cognizant of all the circumstances of my case. I am, and have been for the last four years, a member of Sherman's celebrated battery, and under the immediate command of Captain B. B. Ayers. Through the exposure attendant upon my arduous duties, I was attacked in No vember last with inflammation of the lungs, and was for seventy-tyro days in the hospital. This was followallgegreat debility, heightened by an attack of`dysentery. I was then remov ed from: the White House and sent to this city on board the steamer State of Maine, from which I landed on the 29tli of June. Since that time I have been about as low as any one could be and still retain a spark of vitality. For a week or more I was scarcely able to swat low anything, and if I did force a morsel down, it was immediately thrown up again. I could not even keep,a glass of water on my stomach. =Life could not last under these cir cumstances ; and, accordingly, the physicians who had been working faithfully, though un sucoassfally, to rescue me from the grasp of the dread archer, hankly told and they . could do no more for me and advised meito seen clergyman and to make : Such disposition of my limited funds as best suited me. An acquaintance who visited me it the hospital; Mr. Frederick Stein bron, of Sixth below Arch street, advised me, as nforlorn hope, to tryybur bitters, and kind ly Procured a bottle. From the me I com menced taking them the gloomy shadow of death receded, and I am now, thank God for it, getting trotter. , Though I have taken but two bottles, I have gained ten pounds, and I feel Anguine of being permitted to rejoin my wife and daughter, from whom I have heard nothing for eighteen 'months; for, gentlemen, I am a loyal Virginian, from the vicinity of Front &lel. To your invaluable Bitters I owe the certainty of life whims has taken the place of vague fears—to your Bitters will I owe the glorious privilege of again clasping to my ilosom those who are dearest to me in life. Very truly yours, ISAAC MAWNE. We lully concur in the truth of the above statement, as we had despaired of seeing our comrade, Mr. Malone, restored to health.
