A considerable number of shares have already been taken, and the whole capital required will probably be r lised in a short time. CLWING OF TEE STATE CAPITOL HOTEL —On Ssturday night the boarders of the State Capi tol Hotel, and a number of friends, had a social party, which was highly enjoyed by those pre sent. Prof. Applebaugh'sstring band was there, discoursing excellent music, and everything paesed off pleasantly. This Hotel is now closed for repairs, and after a thorough re-fitting and re-furnishing, will be re-opened—it is expected in about two months. =:132:11 A EIJRGEON CASED. —On Saturday evening the patients of the West Walnut street hospital presented the surgeon in charge, Dr. S. C. King, a very handsome ebony cane, with a richly carved gold head A very appropriate presen tation address was delivered by the hospital chaplain, Rev. Mr. Hatton, and the Doctor, in accepting the present, replied in a few eloquent remarks. Prof. Applebaugh's string band dis coursed some spirited music, both vocal and instrumental. CI Ties Plum of the Citizen Fire Company, on Saturday, was one of the moat agreeable gatti eriegsof the season. There was a large attend ance, and good order prevailed during the day, with but one exception. A number of soldiers who had been p.dd off, visited the ground,- and becoming intoxicated, raised a muss, and . fer a time there wal a regular fight in progress.— Perhaps a score of persons were more or loss bruised. The Fire Company is entirely free from blame, and the members regret the mu tenets. Doubtless there was a handsome profit realized from tLe picnic. A PROF TABLE AUCTIOVESII.—Capt. Gar YOUR DEEDS REOODDED_—Many persons are laboring under the erroneous idea that it is not essential to have deeds recorded. But the law requires that all deeds should be recorded within six months after their execution. A vast amount_ of trouble may be avoided by attending to - this rrquirement of the law. • A GENEROUS ACT.—The citizens of Pittsburg have telographed the Mayor of 'LeavenWorth an offer to furnish homes and educttion to fifty of the children made orphans in the recent LawrenCe massacre. If the offer is accepted, a committee will be s°nt for the children, and the expense of the transfer will be borne by the benefactors. =l:2=l HICKORY Nora —We learn that this favorite and excellent spechs of the nut tribe, is repre sented as being unusually abundant this year. The trees in the low bottom lands in the sur rounding country, are said to be literally bend lug beneath their weight of nuts. The flosts will now very soon ripen them, when the juve niles will, have plenty of fun and frolic in gathering them. JEWELRY STME ROM:MD.—The jewehy estab lishment of Mir. Fred. The thief; - or thieves, effected an entrance through the front door by means of false keys, and although Mr. Beck was sleeping at the time in a small room adjoining, so quietly was the robbery performed that he failed to be . abused from his slumbers. • • THE Tonacco.—We are pleased to leant that I the tobacco in the surrounding country has turned out exceedingly well this season, and the ; crop will be quite heavy. The tobacco was planted in a most favorable season, and nothing whatever interfered with its growth, and the worms which infest the plant were not very troublesome, and did no damage itt all ; conse• quently it could not be otherwise but that the crop should prove good; The raising of this article has proved of lath to be the most profit able business that can be engaged in, and many of our farmers have taken advantage of it and have successfully and profitably cultivated it. It will doubtless, should the present high prices continue, become very generally cultivated in this section. INVASION OF OYSTER'S POINT ST THE COPPER- , HEADS - OF HARRIBBIIRO.—.Peacon 'Barrett, Pussy Pomeroy, ante the Statesman and Orator, .Gen. ham henry on -the Rampage.-Since the rebels ravaged through the Cumberland Valley, to within shooting distance of the SuscintAanna river, the quiet denizens of that ancient local ity, known as Oyster's Point, were not more startled than thery were on Saturday evening last. A friend who lives in the neighborhood writes us a graphic account of the circumstances which led to the convocation and the convulsion at the locality aforesaid, which we condense as follows: It seems that fora week past the an nouncement was made that a Democratic meet ing would be held at Oyster's Point, and that certain distinguished orators, statesmen, spirit rappers, and spirit-lovers, from Harrisburg, would address the assembled 1311415.08 on the evening set apart for the convocation. The sun rose and set as usual. Pays paned, and Saturday evening came, ushered in by flashes of lightning and.peals of thunder. In the midst of these came-also the distinguished speakers from Hai _ risburg. Pussy Pomeroy questioned the policy of calling "spirits from the vasty deep," when the spirits of earth were so near and so cheap in the shape of corn juice. Gen. Hiller acqaiesced in the opinion.of Pussy Pomeroy—and thus the distingnished speakers were almost led into a quarrel on the subject of the failure of the meeting at Oyster's Point, when it was an nounced that the meeting seas organized. And , so it had been! Old 'Outface, Ahe Bar Keep er,the, hostler, and a half dezea bat room loafers had organized, and before these the distinguished speakera ban gued until their throats were I dry, and the wick of the candle had stink low' into the., socket. Nothwithstanding Miller roared and Barret cooed, while Porton) , occupied a corner where he could leer at the chamber maid with his face glowing like a copper kettle in preserving time, sitill the meeting was a complete failure.
