NEW CourrEararni.~Counterfeit $2 bills, purporting to be on the Stroudsburg Rink, Monroe county, Fa., are in circulation. END or ME Dco Ders.--According to the ,Almanac makers, last Monday was the end of the "dog days," for the present summer. This season is usually characterized by great sultri ness, and is conducive to hydrophobia and all - virulent affeetions, and to contagious dieeases. It is particularized, however, as the season when snakes go blind, and when the venom of reptiles (copperheads and all) is most malig nant. What a relief, tberefore, to know that - this season, so unpropitious of good, is at a close once more, that snakes May'again n pers. grinate with restored visions, and humanity be partially freed from surrounding evil. ' =I • MIDDLBTOWN ITEMS.—We learn from the Journal that the iron bridge over the canal at Middletown has been completed. The. Pennsylvania railroad coMpany, is about to build an iron bridge over the Swatara river. The iron to construct the bridge is on the ground, and the mason work was cdmpleted . some time since. . The Journal has the folloaing ou the subject of railroad communication: "There is a Art ng feeling prevailing. in this community against the present arrangement of the Pennsylvania railroad company. There is a great- deal of ttratrel from this place to Harrisburg, and from the.necessity of being there early in the morn ing, especially during the sessions of court, and an numerous other occasions, a morning train is demanded by our business men.' can easily be done, as was formerly the case;:by . at- - tubing a passenger car to the first freight train, westward. G. Steever, of the borough of Millers burg, who is urged by his numerous friends for nomination for Assembly. I do not wish to say a disparaging word about other, though less deserving candidates, whose claims are urged, each one doubtless possessing qualifica tions more or lees adapted to the responsible position they aspire to ; but take it as a whole, Dr. Steever decidedly outvies them all. Having known him from his boyhood, lam able to judge . intelligently. - His business qualifications are. not easily excelled. Strictly temperate in his habits, he possesses a reputation for veracity, honesty and general intelligence truly enviable. He is truly loyal and faithful to the interests of the county, and the Great National &pub* Bean party; and he has never been known to "bolt" any-nomination, although otter ungen erously dealt with, on occasions when injustice he should have been one of the standard bear ers of the party. Hoping that for once, and for the good of the Republican party, feelings of personal animosity and the selfish aggrandizements of certain "cliques," who always seek their own good in preference of the party's and their country's good, will be laid aside at our approaching County Convention, and that Dr. B. G. Steever will be nominated by acclaination, as a candi- Ijos for the Legislature, feeling satisfied that vie nprr election of old Dauphin seed not be ;t he of the , nomination. JIINIVE. =I =:=::1 DECISION UNDER ED S Hur, following information from the Cuintiii-A,utr of th-- Geucral Land Office, upon which all the ecisious of that office are based, is of import ance. When a party has made au actual loca tion by pre-emption or otherwise, in virtue of a bounty land warrant, he cannot lift the land warrant and enter under the homestead act, because, having elected to satisfy his claim to a specific tract of land by locating a warrant he must abide by his own act. A pre-t mptor who has filed a declaratory patent, cahuot convert his pre-emption into a homestead claim. AN APPEAL PROM Mae. A. Id. We call particular attention to the following remarkable and well authenticated cure of one of the nation's heroes, whose life, to use his own language, "has been saved by the Bitters:" Pmtsrampina, August 23d, 1862. Messrs. Jones & Evans gentlemen, your Hoofland's German Bitters has saved my life. There is no mistake in this. It is vouch ed for by numbers of my comrades, some of whose names are appended, and who were fully cognisant, of all the circumstances of my ease. I am, and have been for the last four years, a member of Sherman% Celelbilfe4l battery; and coder the immediate command of Captain R. B. Ayers. Through the exposure attendapt upon my arduous duties, I was attacked in No vember last with infiarnmetion of the lucgs, and was for seventy-two days in the hospital. This was follovred by great debili.y, heightemd by an attack of dprentery. I was then remov ed from the White House and sent to this city on board the steamer State of Maine, from which I landed on the 28th of June. Since that time I have been about as low as any one could be and still retain a spark of vitality. For a week or more I was scarcely able to swat low anything, and if I did force a morsel down, it was Immediately thrown up again. I could not even keep a glass of water on ray stomach. Life could not last under these cir cumstances; and, accordingly, the physiciana who had been working faithfully, though un successfully, to rescue me from the grasp of the dread archer, frankly told me they could do no more for me and advised me to see a clergyman and to make such disposition of my limited funds as best suited me. An acquaintance who visited me at the hospital, Mr. Frederick Steil:l imn, of Sixth below Arch street, advised me, as a forlorn hope,- to try your bitters, and kind ly procured a bottle: From the time I com menced taking them the gloomy shadow of death receded; and I am now, thank God for it, getting better. Though I have taken but two bottles, I have gained ten pounds, and I feel sanguine of being permitted to rejoin my wife and daughter, from whomlhave heard nothing for eighteen months; for, gentlemen, I am a loyal Virginian, from the vicinity of Front Royal. To your invaluable Bitters I owe the certainty of life which has taken the place of vague fears—to your Bitters will I owe the glorious privilege of again clasping to my noeow those who are dearest to me in life. Very truly yours, ISAAC MALONE. • We fully concur in the truth of the above statement, as we had despaired of seeing on comrade,Mr. Malone, restored to health.
