GETTING NEWS UNDER. DIFFICU I LTIRB —An ec clesiastical trial occurred lately at Peoria, 11l , and, to prevent its publication, all the persona were previously sworn not to divulge proceed ings. The trial was held in a building in which fire company met in one of the rooms. Two reporters for the press took a suction hose, fas : iened it to the end of the stovepipe, inserted it In the chimney, and by that means conveyed the sound into the room below, where they took notes, which next morning appeared ,in the newspapers generally, to the surprise•of the ; bcurt. EXTENSIVE FIRES IN THE MOUNTAINS.-Diiiillg 4 latt week, destructive fires have been raging in tthe mountains of Blair and Cambria counties. The destruction, of timber has been verpgreat, and it required much exertion and vigilance to .k: . i . .prevent the houses and other buildings: on the track of the devouring element trent being de- stroyed. We learb from the:Register of but one life being lost, which was that of a little girl, whose bonnet was ignited from a spark, and being rapidly communicated to her other clothing, she was eo dreadfully burned that she died in a few hours thereafter in great agony. =I STEEL COLLARS.—These substitutes for linen and paper collars, are gradually taking the place of the latest styles of "chokers" and "turn downs," and will, ere long, become as popular as any article of clothing now worn. Yesterday we noticed several buttoned around the necks of as many different Individuals, and they all -unite in testifying to their early use by all classes and grades of society. They feel as coin"- fortable around the neck as a linen collar, and no Inconvenience whatever is felt by constantly wearing them. We have received no notice of their introduction into this city by . 'any of our leading merchants, and are ansiousli their arrival, in order to lay in a stock of _the "improved steel .choken3." BETIIIMED HoMs.—Yeaterday afternoon the members of the 18fith regiment. Penna. Vole , had received their discharges and pay from the Government, and before dark last evening a large majority of them were on their Way home. This regiment represented five counties, Alle gheny, Tioga, • Lucerne, Westrisoreland - and, Dauphin, those from Dauphin having been re cruited after the men from the other counties had arrived at Camp Curtin. When;the regi ment returned to this city at the expiration of their term of service, it had been reduced by the vicissitudes of the camp and field to less than seven hundred effective men. At the time of their muster out of service, the regiment was under the command of Col. Thomas H. The dispatch =Tu ning the news, as published, came over the telegraph lines with the signal of the telegraph operator at Johnstown ,and the gentlemanly' ope-' rator liere, when - he received the dispatch; asked the plain question, "Are you jokirkg,or is it truer' to which an answer was received, "It is true." The Johnstown operator, we understand, denies that he sent any such dispatch. If that be true, some other operator on the line used the signal of that office, and he, whoever it may be, de serves great censure, not only from the public, bat a: prompt dismissal from service. We published the dispatch as , received Mite over ,t4ti telegraph, under our usual heading,: and we are glad to learn that it was unfounded; yet the originators of such dispatches deritroY the 86fidence and usSfalikass of telegraph lines,, and the practice of joking: with matters of that /rind csanotba.condemned too strongly. n. 1.3 A STATED MEETING of the Good Will Fire company will ba held in their hall this Monday evening. latendauce is requested.
