STABLE FLOORS OF GRAVEL, STONE
AND COAL TAR.
Among the materials ol late recommend
ed (or stable floors, are a mixture cf coal tar
With gravel and stone. The manner in which
the work is done is to take email stones and
put tbom in a pile, pouting over the same
the gas tar, and then mixing wth a shove!
until the stones are coated. These stones
are now laid on the floor about throe inchr*
deep. Upon thts floor coarse gravel mix*.!
in the satire way with tar is placed. The
mixture lsifftcttd by putting the gravel in
piles and making a hole in the top, pouting
in the tar and mix ng with a shovel. It 1*
then spread over tho stnes two inches
thick.
No more tar should be usc l than just suf
ficient to coat the stones and gravel, as it
will be longer in drying. The stones and
• gravel, should be laid as above, and a heavy
roller weighing 400 or 500 pounds i* passe i
over the floor until it is perfectly cm part,
and any places not touched by the r- I er are
beaten down with a heavy maul. H'.iV the
rolling and mauling >s gong c>n. tha eurfso*
should be strewn over with fb.e travel r
sand, to taKe up surplus tar, st.d ah u d be
continued until the atirfiicj is dry enough to
walk upon and not stick to one's shots. Ti.e
floor is rat ptoof an 1 becomes hard and dur
ab'e, making, it is said, the best fl >or that
can be put into a stable ; the only objection
being the smell of the tar, wh eh, however,lß
healthy, and in tune passes off.
He find the substance of the above in the
Vermont Record, wttfiout any names being
given of persona who have trie 1 it. He
should presume that a pood substantial floor
could be laid in thte way, and it hs th
ment of being cheap, and what every farmer
and his workmen can readily do, with'ul
employing more expensive ib r. It to ks
practical and is well Worth trying. I lieu

THIRSTING FOR MORE LAND.
One cf the nrnst grii v.iti" errors of the ps-t
and present genttioti cf American farmers
is the m jst ineatiablv 4 thirst I- r more Uti l.—
Kot one in a thousand though p -e- 4 ed of
five times ss many acres as he can profitably
or successfully till, is aatisfi -t. H otle tin*
is perfectly natural it is at the aamn tim<-
very unwise. The fattier rec-gini'S hi*

greerihacks. It ia always had p hey to but
more laud, and give tuat.ure in homeopathic
doses to that already tn possession. Thi
safe and sure guide for the larmer is to at

ery day's d> m-nstrates the fac,
that with occasional exceptions, a Itttie farm
well tilled is more profi able in the end than
a large one ind ff-rtntly cultivated. IE.
once rekd a fl"ry of a Frttcliman who
had two daughters. One of thcin marr vd,
and received cne half of the al vine
yard aa her dowry. To the old mart's sur
prise, ihe half he had teeervid, receiving as
much cultivation a* he foim.rly bestowed
upon the whole, yielded as much as be bad

one half of what he had lell, at d still bad a*
