The Progress or Ten Years.— lt more than ten years since Vo bedkpe a resident of Wellsboro. Looking faadf over that period we discover the evidences of ’- prog reei of .which the village need not boaabatned. The spirit of improvement, in all that pertains to the material betterment of the towno hoe, in deed been active during the decade; Xet os look at the village and mark' the changes. Beginning at the lower end of ’the.bown on the Charleston road we see first the 3lne tan nery of Mjr. Riberolle, and his neat^cottage, neither of which had an existence at tlte period named. On the Tioga road the neat diallings of Mr. Blattner, Mr. Foley, end fiW’Bacon have been added, below what was then the " last house” in the borough. “ The last house” was thas i. telv occupied by Mr. Fk'Sherwood, the chief - improvements around which have been made within ten years. .Next comes the fine dwelling built by Mr. S. R. Smi'ih. A few doors above, in place of the etreSt'-firowd ing house in the old, style, we have the itylish cottage built and occupied by Mr, C. L* \filcox, and surrounded by ope.of the prettiest yards to be found in any village. Adjoining this is another neat cottage, remoddled bj the late Hr. Q, D. Smith, now owned by Mr. Charles William’s. Nearly opposite are the'house.and pounds of Mr. L. Baobe, looking as little as they did ten 1 years ago as one can imag ine. Farther up Main Street is the no, v house built by Lieut. Col. Hill, and on \be o truer of the next block stands Roy’s Buildingvin which the Agitator is printed, the best ' constructed building of wood, in the village. Ftoib this point to the next corner the buildings “are all the product of the last four years. Roy’s Build ing is just about ten’years-old. On die oppo site side cf the street wo have the oficef built by Dr. Gibson, the Flour store of Wright and Baiiny, Cfae meat market, built by Mr. Wm. Roberts, all within four or five yews. The next block presents fewer improvements, but the store built by R. C. "Bailey Is bile "of the best in the village. Then we have jail end Sheriff’s house, built of brick. IjjSe next considerable improvement is the projected new dwelling' jf Dr., Shearer which, why t' fitiieh ed, will be one of-the best in the v. age.— Nearly opposite, a very fine improve! iient has been made by Mr. M. M. Gonvers, I ud still lower down, another neat cottage hyjs been built by Dr. N. Packer. Passing on up Main Street, there is .the new house built by Mr. Richards on the right, and •hat built by Mr. J. StieTdin, on the left. -Bat •he improvement ebqve the bridge >js greater in •his part of the village. First, on.-'khe right ia •he double cottage Built by A. Cfparlj Esq.,— Opposite, tbe new dwelling owned\y. Mr. W. Smith. Tbe dwellings oboyel Esquire Orowl’s, occupied and owned, respectively, by hln G. P. Card and Mr. C. Q.-Of good, are SQon B the best in tbe village—the letter being finest, in some respects, on MtiiiJ Street.— ••ween them is a new bourse Mr. For tjth—all the fruits of recent enterprise. These wniprise the principal improvements,on Main •■ within the boro lines. i _ But farther np the road there is a li|tle clus ter of neat white cottages, which Wete not to hs seen ten years ago. These own by Germans. Mr. Calkin Vhotw, ire think, Was within ten years, and tbesitoprove- B *nts- on the lot are not as old as {fee; home. We now step across to the upper end of Pearl street, and begin with the Academy, which has been thoroughly renovated during the period. Then there is the house opposite, built by Mr. Reilly, sad that built bv Mr. 0. N. Dartt. On the corner below, the new bouse built by Mr. S. H.- Landis, and the story and a half tenant house, standing nest in order, also built by Mr. L. The nest improvement in or der is represented by the beautiful house end grounds of Mr. Wm. Bacbe—the finest and. costlieet private improvement made during the decade. Passing on we pass a new dwelling, built by Mr. George West. Nest is the School House, which is certainly one of,the most use ful public improvements made. On the corner below stands the new dwelling of Dr. C.jN. Dartt, and opposite, the house and office of J, N. Bache—chiefly improvements of the last ten years. OUB Pew new buildings have been put up from this point on Pearl Street to the State Road; but there are several nice improvements on the lateral streets. ' -- r~ 4U. — ► I- ,p — ._ i ■». ■ »rw«SXVlUittrUUli IJwl been produced on the State Road. Ten years ago all the space lying between Mr.T. P. Win gate’s and Mr. B. T. Vanhorn’s, was an un sightly swamp, full of stumps, brush, pools of stagnant water and rank' weeds. To-day, by virtue of the enterprise of Mr. A. P. Cone, that waste place is occupied by two snug two story frames, neatly enclosed. . Through tbs enterprise of the same gentleman the same side of the street displays four more neat two. story dwellings, and a field under a good de gree of cultivation where but a few years ago lay a kind of hard-baok barren. On tbe South side of the road ten years ago there were but two' bouses within the borough lines. To-day there are no less than ten com fortable cottages with gardens and outhouses.. We do not recollect what was the precise condition of Water Street ten years ago ; but several valuable improvemnts have been made. On the'“ Canada side’’ Mr. M. Bullard has just completed one of tbe prettiest cottages to be found in any village. Further along, on the high- ground to the left, Mr. H. W . Wil liams has built himself a neat snuggery, and on the right; nearly opposite, stand s a neat dwelling built by Mrs. Meek. We are aware that many improvements have escaped our notice in this sketch ; but we are not disposed to exhaust tbe subject at once.—. Let ua look at the business improvements a moment. These an;—First-tfae Foundry andMacbine shop tl red put up by Messrs. Young & Williams, last year. The work is done by steam power, and a planing mill is attached. Second—tbe Cabinet and Chair s hop built by Mr. Vanhorn, run by steam power. Third—t he Cabinet and Chair Shop of- Mr. Jacob Sticklin, 1 also with steam power. Fourth—Lee’s Woollen factory, operated by steam. Fifth—the Brewery—also operated by “ steam.” These improvements have been made within six years. t *l* In TTellsboro. Dec. BUt, 1854- by A. S.
