fire dollar notes on the Bst t ot Northumberland were
pot 'lnto circulation in thii place. They were dated
February —, 185$, and’riguod by J. R. Priestly,
Cashiei, and John Tagged, President* is well to
observe that- Mr. Tagghrtiigped no notes since De
cember, 1854, and retired/coßi office in 1855. These
notes are circulated to de< inexperienced persons.
The paper is rather Ugh- ,apd the shading over the

Owners op Unpatekxed Lasd.—The Act of As
sembly in relation to the graduating and valuation of
unparented lands by (he CommisaioSers of the several
counties of Pennsylvania, will expire, by its own
limitation, on the first August, 1863. Those
interested bad better toke^mdvantage of it in time,
and have their lobda'appratsed by the Commissioners
and patented; before the date above given.
Ok Friday last,, Mr. Qridley,- of Caledonia, bagged
a Washington Edgle, which bad done considerable
mischief in carrying off lambs, chickens, do. The
bird measures across his wings six feet nine inches.—

COMMON SOHOOXiB.
The County Superintendent elect, has this day re
ceived bis Commission from the Department of Corn
mom Schools. He will immediately -take the required
oath according to law, and enter upon the duties of
his office.
The first doty, after disposing of ibe correspond
ence with the Department at Harrisbarg, which ha?
accumulated since the first of Jane, will be to visit
the Summer Schools. It sbeald be borne in mind
that at least one mpnth of the time .which may ordi
narily ha employed in visiting the summer schools,
has already elapsed, and as a little extra time will be
required in which to become acquainted with the
roads and the location of the different school booses,
it will be impossible for the Superintendent to visit
all the schools before the expiration of the present
term.
Daring the first ten or fifteen minutes of each visit,
the Teacher will be expected to Continue bis regular
school exercises withent interruption, after which be
be prepared for a review of all his classes.
The Teachers’ Monthly Report Book should always
be present for examination. This is particularly rec
ommended by the State Superintendent.
Teachers who do not read this-communication, will
not be excusable; for, not to read at least ooarof the
county papers is inexcusable negligence on the part
of the Teacher.
Directors who hare not sent in their Four Months
Certificates or Annual District Reports, should do so
as convenient that they may be examined
and rcmailed to the Department as soon os possible.
The Foot Months Certificates require a five cent rev
enue stamp. The Annual Reports require none.

DIED.
In Middlebury, on the 3d inst., (after the third at
tack of apoplexy, and an illness of only three days,)
BETSEY, wife of Aaron Niles, aged 63 years, and
29 days.
„ Mrs. Niles had been twice married. Her first bus
band bore the name of J. M. Kilbourne. She was
born in 1798, in the town of Keene, N. H. She came
into Northern Pennsylvania, about 57 years ago; and.
on March 4,1833, became connected by marriage with,
'Aaron Niles, of Niles Valley. She joined the Meth
odist Episcopal Church at Wellsboro, about 38 years
ago. Having settled in the town, of Middlebury, she
found no Methodist Society within convenient dis
tance, and therefore formed a connection with a Bap
tist Society in that town, which society was then un
der the pastoral supervision ef Rev. James Coffin.—
About ten years ago she was attacked with apoplexy.
About five years later, she was, again attacked with
the same disease. She became very infirm fin conse
quence of these repeated strokes, so much so that it
was very difficult for her to mere herself from one
place to another in the room. She received a third
and final attack of the same malady, on Saturday,
May 30, baring been prostrated by it upon the floor,
while making her way to her bed at evening. She
remained in a semi-conscious state till Wednesday,
June 3, when she died.at 7 o’clock a. u. Her funeral
took place at the Niles Valley school house, on
Thursday, June 4. J. D. B,

lin Hollow and Hartt Settlement, will have a pic-nic
party in the' Grove near M&Hennison's, on Saturday,
13th just, for t&e benefit their pastor. Messrs.
Thomas Allen, M. H. Cobb?, and J. B. Niles are ex
pected to be present and address the gathering. All

May, J. H. Stubbs* Store and phrt of his goods were
destroyed by fire. He wu insured by J. D. Mande
viQe, of Belmont, Allegany county, K. Y., Agent for
the Manhattan Insurance Company, of H. T. City,
in the amount of $lOOO. On the Bth of Jane the
Actuary of the Company, Mr. Nye, was en the ground
and settled the loss by paying it in fall to the entire,
