[Advertisement.] - • r - THE HBOPOBED HEW BAtLBOAIK Mr. Editor : Jh my last I was compelled for want of time to leave one part of the argument of “ Tioga Connty” in favor'of |Mr. Magee's road unnoticed. Since then another champion °f Mr. Magee has leaped into the ring, and brandishes the same argument over the signature of “ Tioga." For my part, I was not inclined to bo drawn into a protracted discussion of the subject. I did feel as though no unbiased mind could fail to see the injustice of Ur. Magee’* de mands, and I thought it dne to the Tioga Company that public attention should be called to the subject. Since the two writers* “Tioga County" and “Ti oga" have seen fit, however, to thrust beforejthe pub lic as facts, the statements contained in their articles, the same motives which prompted m&to call attention to the subject at first, require me to examine (heir facts and figures. “ Tioga County" says that in 1862 Mr. Magee transported over the Tioga Road 137,000 tons and that the Tioga road charged him 80 cents per ton for the use of their road ” Now, laying aside all such charges of “ ignorance,” “misrepresentation" Ac., as seem to he so necessary a part of the articles of both the writers named, let ns examine the figures. The Tioga Company and Mr. Magee together have established long since, a tariff of freight Ac,, over the road. The freight thus received has been divided between the two roads npon the following basis: The whole road is 41 miles in length, of which 26 miles belong to the Tioga Com pany, ahd 15 to Mr. Magee. Of all freight received, Magee receives 15-41 and the Tioga Company 26.41. id to omit is (' Army tt week, He sends coal over the road—say one ton -for ex ample. He is charged for the freight and credited, with 15-41 of the amount, or over one third of the whole freight. In addition to this he is allowed on all coal sent to tide water and to certain other points a deduction of 20 per cent on the gross amount of freight charged on such coal. >ffici*ted in This single item amounted in 1862 to $15,553 17 The /act thcrefhre is that « Tioga Courtly” charge! the Tioga Company with baring received from Ma gee just $15,553 17 more money on freight on coaj than was paid to both'companies together . Then after this large'deduction has been made Mr. Magee re ceives 15-41 of the entire balance. on the The amount realized by the Tioga Company from transportation of Magee’s coal instead of being 80 cents per ton as alleged, would average for the year 1862 just about 44} cents per ton. Bat u Mr.’Magee is plundered,” says our friend, by the Tioga Company?- And bow is he plundered ? He himself helped adjust the tariff of freights now in use on the whole road, and over one third of (hem -goes into his own pockets. Ho has never been known to mahftaatwiy uneasiness of conscience at receiving his share of t&s'fteights paid by" lumbermen, by the .Morris Run Coal Company, or by miscellaneous freights. He has yet to show tbo just twinges of re morse at being a party to the “p!nnder”*(if the pres ent tariff does plunder anybody) of any'other person or-company. But when he, John Magee, pays the same freights which he exacts from others, tben r he, John Magee, is plundered, but others paying the same freights are not. 1 But in addition to his receiving his 4 of the amount of .his freights the Tioga Company havo given him 20 per cent of their § by way of deduction on coal sent to tide water Ac. This gives him a decided ad vantage over his oion tariff of freight. Still he in sists that he is plundered—and still he receives with the utmost complacency 4 of the freights of those who do not get a deduction and he would tell you that they are not plundered. It is impossible to satisfy one who looks at things through such a medium ns Mr, Magee’s mental vision would appear to bo. ■ When others pay and ho re ceives, then it ia all right and business-like—the tariff is reasorable, and be is a miserable grumbler who finds fault with it. When he pays and gets 20 per cent given to him at that, then ia it “plunder ing?” \Vell, Mr. Magee, suppose we take you at your word —where’does the respons ; Ulity for this plundering rest. Clearly are establish the tariff. Who fixed that? John or tbo Tioga Company?— Then be is complaining of that fpr which he is him self responsible. But a sort of secondary responsibility rcsjson those who participate in tbe plunder obtained not only from Mr. Magee but from every other patron of the road. Who are they? This same John Magee or the Tioga Company. Then he is not only* responsible for that of which he complains, but he pockets his share of the general “plunder,” and his share of the' very ipecial plunder obtained from himself b^gides. This “plunder” argument Is rather more extraor dinary than the “ rich and populous” one at which we looked last week. We think neither of them can bo of much use to their author, and we feel well as sured that bo good reason can be given in favor of the now road.
