Judge Flanders, the Editor of.the Malone (Franklin
N. T.) Gazette, was arrested on the charge of dis.
.loyalty, and sent to Fort Warren. His wife contin
ued to publish the paper during her husband's impris
onment. Duncan S. Magee, of Watkins, sent $5O to
sustain the -paper, and for this act the Democratic
Presses of this section are now liberally “puffing"
Mm. Mr. Hull, of the Conner thus takes the starch
out of Magee.
“Jedge Flanders was arrested and sent to Port War
ren, we think, instead oj Eort Lafayette, for his dis
loyally.
Mf.'Magoe, who contributed $5O to-bia wife, to en
able her to cpntitine the publication of the disloyal
sheet, was probahly influeneed by one of two motives
—either by sympathy with suffering humanity gener
,al!y, or j sympathy with tho'pro'slavery rebellion in
particular; which, wo-oan not say,but weure.flightly
Auspicious that the,la tier was the moving cause.'
If Judge Flanders had been travelling in -‘Dixie,”
and'had been thrown into Jail on the charge of being
an abolitionist, we do not believe that Mr.-Magee's
bowels of compassion would have been moved thus
actively towards tbe disconsolate'Mrs. Handers; he
would probably have said, 'served him right, he had,
no business do—n there,’ and ‘nary a ren’ would have
escaped him. J
If this thing had happened last October, we do not I
believe that the Democratic papers in this Senatorial
district would have made the least mention of it nnMl
after thy election; for fear, that the electoih would
have-called to mind a homely but familiar adage, ‘as
the bid cock crows the young ones learn.’”-|-£7orm'»y
