Bes-iasiis Wes*—The ideas which "West enter tained in childhood, of the dignity of his future profession, are well illustrated in the following incident, recorded by his biographer Galt: When he was some nine years of age, one of his school-fellows allured him, on a half holiday, from- trap and ball, by premising him a ride to a.neighboring plantation.! ‘Here is the horse, bridled and saddled,’ said his friend,’ so come get up behind me,. •Behind you I* said Benjamin; ‘I will ride behind nobody.' ‘Oh, very well,’ replied the other, ‘I will ride behind you—so mount.’ lie mounted accordingly, and away they rode. ‘This is the last ride I shall have,’ said his companion, ‘for some time. To-morow lam to be appreticcd to a tailor.’ . ‘A tailor !, exclaimed West; ‘you will surely never be a tailor ?’ ‘lndeed but 1 shall,’ replied the other; ‘it is a good trade. What do yon intend to be, Benja min ?’ I ‘A painter.’ ‘A painter ! What sort of a trade is a paint er? 1 never heard of it before., ‘A pointer,’ said this bumble son of a Penn sylvania Quaker, ‘is the companion of kings and emperors,’ •You are shnrely mad,’ rejoined the embryo tailor; ‘there are neither kings nor emperors in America.’ ‘Ay, but there are plenty in other parts of the world. And do yon really intend to be a tailor ?, , “Indeed I do— there is nothing surer.’ “Then you may ride alone,' said the future companion of kings and emperors, leaping down ; I will not ride with one wiling to (be a tailor.' Pleasure, like quicksilver, is bright and shy. If we strive to grasp it, it still eludes us, and still glitters. We perhaps seize it at last, and find it rank poison. C. To the President of 'the Pennsylvania Agricultural Society: The subscribers, your committee to examine the contents of a Salamander Safe of Watson, after being exposed to a strong fire on the Fair Grounds for eight hours, respectfully represent— That after seven cords of oak wood and three of pine had been consumed around the Safe, it was open ed in the presence of the committee, and the contents taken out, a little warmed, but not even scorched. Several Silver Medals heretofore received by the manufacturers,, and a large quantity of documents were in the Safe, and came out encirely uninjured. The experiment satisfied us of the capacity of r Safes ofithis kind to protect contents from any fire to which they may be exposed. The Committee award a Diploma and Silver Medal. * Qbo. W. Evans A Watson, Philadelphia: Gentlemen : It affords mo gteat pleasure to say to you that the Salamander Safe, which I purchased of you in February, 1858, proved to be what you recom mended it—-a sure protection from fire. My store house together with several others, was burned to the ground in March last. The Safe fell through into the cellar, and was exposed to intense heat* for six or eight hours, and when it was taken from the ruins and opened, ajll its contents were found to be in a perfect state, the books and papers not being injured in the least.
