Bu.vawav. —On Saturday, of last week, a horse, belonging to Joel Gatlin got frightened and run, taking a post through Main Street with him. We learn that he was badly hurt. ZS* The TVeatiieu. —Monday will be remembered rs being a very'cold day to many of our citizens. It wag so cold that a few of them had to carry a bottle of strychnine in their pockets, with the contents in their brains, to keep from freezing. jj3T“ The Tioga County Musical Association held Us annual Convention at Tioga Village, under the direction of Prof. L. M. Fox, commencing February 2S\h, and continued four days. The proceedings were received too late for last week's issue. They will be . found in another column. Z 3" Freshet. —The rain and mildness of the weather of last week were sufficient to produce a ••rafting freshet,” yet few were prepared to take ad vantage of the flood and float their lumber to South ern markets. Those who did succeed to launch their rafts, have certainly suffered a great deal from the effects of wind and storm, since their departure. pST SrcciAL Election*. —A special election was held in this Boro on Saturday of last week, for the purpose of electing a Burgess. The election resulted in the choice of .Rudolph Cfaristenat There were three candidates in the field, who respectively received 29. 7 and 3 votes each. R. Chrlstenat receiving a majority over the other candidates was duly declared elected. B’c should think Mr. Christenat \roiild make a very good Burgess. A Fiendish Ol*tu vge in* Addison. —Lust week a brute named Bccraft, and employed by Charles Phillips, of Addison, attempted to violate the daughter of bis employer, a little child only three years old; but was prevented by the timely interference of the child's mother. Mr. Phillips immediately discharged Jjecrafi, procured a heavy horse whip, and gave the villain a terrible castigation, after vibicb be applied a cunt of tar and cotton, and set him adrift toward Pa. He left a wife and child In Knoxville, Pa., about a \ear ago.— Elmira Advertiser. y2r*Ani:Yoi' Going? —The Spring Tcftfi of the Academy commences Monday, April 2d, and continues fourteen weeks, as will be seen by the advertisement The Trustees have certainly used discretion by chang ing the Academic 3*ear from four to three terms. The change is evidently advisable both as respects cheap r.C'S and efficiency, since the patrons thereby receive proportionality au increase of labor and consequently benefit for less money in the shape of tuition. Sum* say, they are ui\able to pay increased rates of tuition: they fail to see (hat the increase of tuition m proportionality less than the increase of lime. View ing the matter in a pecuniary point of view, Wo see then that the contemplated change is manifestly in ac cordance with the feelings of those who desire in creased facilities without increase of cost- The proper development of the mind should not be esti mated by dollars and cents. We should renumber that virtuous and educated men are tire ornaments of their parents. They are more. They are the 1 orna ment? of the community. They go out from the Aca demic Hall—not simply to bear their father’s nor merely to swell the number of laborers, of arti sans, nod of professional men, —but to enlarge the happiness, the reputation, the efficiency and the eleva tion of society.
