Deacon John Boiled. The following is a good illustration of sec tarian bigotrv, as welt as characteristic inci dent in the life of Deacon Bolls, who was an eminent type of the age in which he lived, for. personal and private worth, both as a man dnd a Christian : When ihe Baptists of Hartford began to hold public services, an over zealous member of Dr. Strong’s society called upon him and asked him if he knew that John Bolles bad started an opposition meeting. “No,” said he, “when—where?” “Why at the old court house.” “O, yes, I know it,” the doctor carelessly replied ; “but it is not an opposition meeting. They are Baptists, to be sure, but they preach the same doctrine that I do. You had belter go and hear them.” “Go,” said the man, “I am a Presbyte rian.” “So am I,” rejoined Dr. Strong, “but that need not prevent us from wishing them well. You had belter go.” “No,” said the man with energy, “I shan’t go hear them. Dr. Strong, aint you going to do-sprhething about it V’ “What J” “S op.il, can.’t you?” “My friend,” said the doctor, seriously, “John Jdolles is a good man, and will surely gci. io heaven. If you and I get there, we s'lialfmeet him, and we had better, therefore, cultivate a pleasant acquaiulance with him he^e.” Sixty years ago, when the - toleration of the denomination'to which Deacon B. belon ged,, was of a limited character, the perti nence of the above anecdote wiil be better 1 understood. No layman in New England lever exalted a wider influence for good, or held a higher position in behalf of the rights of conscience. His home was ever known as the house of the “Master’s brethren,” where-his benevolent hospitality entertained the oppressed and weary pilgrims of religious persecutions. ■ Music and Flowers. —Two gifts God has bestowed on us that have Jin themselves no guilty trait, and show an qssential divine uess. Music is one of them, which seems as though it were never born of eanh, but lin gers with us from the gales of heaven.— Mu sic, which brealhes over the gross, or sad, or doubling heart, to inspire it with a conscious ness of its most mysterious affinities, and to touch the cords of its undevoted, unsuspec ted life. And the other gift is that of flowers, which, though born of earth, we may well, believe, if anything of earthly soil grows inj 'he higher realm—if any of its methods are' continued—if any of its forms are identical there, will live on the banks of the river of Life. Flowers, that in all our -gladness, in 411 our sorrow, are never ipcongruous— always appropriate. Appropriate in the Church, as expressive of its purest of most social themes, and blending their sweetness with the incense of prayer. Appropriate in the joy of the marriage hoar, in the loneli ness of the sick room, and crowning with prophecy the foreheads of the dead. They give completeness to the associations of child hood,-and are appropriate even by the side of old age, strange as their freshness con trasls with the wrinklesand the grey hairs; for still they are symbolical of the soul’s perpetual youth, the inward blossoming of immortality, the amaranthine crown. In their presence we feel that whenjhe body shall drop as a withered calyx, the soul shall go forth as a winged seed.—[JJee. F. H. Chapin, Mahomet. —Slightly above lha middle size, his figure though spare, was handsome and commanding, the chest broad ond open, the hones and framework large, the joints well knit together. His neck was long and finely moulded. The head—unusually large— gave space for! a broad and noble brow. The hair, thick, jet black and slightly curling, fell down over his ears. The eye-brows were arched and joined j the countenance thin, but ruddy. His large eyes, intensely black and piercing, received additional lustre from their long, dark eyelashes. The nose was high and slightly aquiline, but fine, and at the end attenuated. The teeth were far apart. A long, black, bushy beard, reaching to the breast,'added manliness and presence. His expression Jvas pensiveanchcoDlemplalive.— The face beamed with intelligence, though something of the sensuous might also be there discerned. His broad back leaned slightly forward as he walked; and his step was hasty, yel sharp and decided, like that bf one rapidly descending a declivity. There was something unsettled in his bloodsho' eye, which refused to rest upon its object. When he turned towards you, it was never partially but with the whole body.—[.Muir’s Life of Mahomet. State’s Evidence. —A good story is told of George While, a notorious thief, in Wor cester county, Mass. He was once arraigned for horse stealing, when it was supposed he was connected with an extensive gang, which was laying contributions upon all the stables round about. Many inducements were held out to White to reveal the names of his asso ciates, but he maintained a dogged silence. An assurance from the court was a! last ob tained that he should be discharged, upon which he'made oath to reveal all he knew of his accomplices. The jury were accordingly suffered to bring in a verdict of “not guilty,” when he" was called upon (or the promised revelations. “I snail be faithful to my word,’* said he; “understand then that the devil is the only accomplice f ever ha been a great while in parlnershi| acquitled me, you may hang him il Caleb him.” A gentleman named Fanshaw, residing in Saratoga county, New York, offered to allow one Sanderson to burn down his cow house if Judge Parker failed to get 5,000 majoriety for Governor. Mr. Sanderson won the priv ilege of touching off the cow house and the cow house was burnt to the ground. In bur ning the cow house, Mr. Sanderson nlso burnt two cows, worth S9O. Mr. Fanshaw admits that his friend had - a perfect right to burn the house, but not! the cattle. For doing this latter, Fanshavl has commenced suit against Sanderson. Afteb-Eiecxioj? Mcsihqs. —The Albany Times gives the following’rather natural mu sings of an individual in that city, .fever the aspect of things before eleclion and afier. r - “ ‘Election’s over, and Jonathan Nicholson ain’t no ’count any longer,’ A fortnight ago, and he was as great a man as' anybody.— His vole was just as good and counted as much as the Mayor’s or the Governor’*. Nicholson was a man of consequence then. They had him around.ai thaWard meetings, they put him on committees, they told him he was a man of great influence, they invi ted him to Weldon’s, and other places, to ‘lake something,’ they, palled him on the shoulder, and told him to go ahead and help save the country, and they would do some thing handsome by him. Nicholson has.done as be agreed. He worked eight and day for (he ticket. Now that ’lection’s over, Jon a than Nibholson ain’t no where. These poli ticians repudiate him. They do not even look at him in the street. They pass him by as if he-was a common loafer. From this day Nicholson passes upon all 'politicians, they are hypocrites. Nicholson, you have been scandalously sold.” ■A Question at Law. —A Kentucky law yer on circuit was asked to dine with the Judge. At the table, the Judge, as is his custom, asked a blessing, and shortly after arose from his seat and look from the side hoard a bottle of old Bourbon, of which he invited his guests to partake, partaking free ly himself, as is also his custom. After-din ner, the lawyer said : “Judge, will you permit me to ask you a question ?” “Oh, certainly,” replied the Judge, “what is it?” “I observed,” said the lawyer, “that after you had asked a blessing you set on the bot tle. Now I wish lo know whether you are ashamed to ask a blessing on (be liquor,, or whether you thought it was good enough with out ?” A Man with a Living Head but a Dead Body !— A short time since a farmer, who resides about five miles from Hamilton, visited the city on business, and while here met with an accident which caused the dialo cation of the vertebra: of his neck. The unfortunate man we regret to learn, is now lying in an utterly hopeless condition, being unable to move hands or legs, or to perform any of his natural functions—in a word, he Is a living head, but a dead body. He has lain in this state since the occurrence of ,the accident, and the probability is, that he Will never regain the use of bis limbs. The poor man is attended by Dr. Mclntosh, who, we learn, entertains no hope of his recovery. — Hamilton , C. W. Times. BUSINESS DIRECTORY. Hydropathic Physician and Surgeon. The Hottentots at the cape of Good Hope have long used this article as a remedy in a variety of diseases. From them the medicine was borrowed by the English and Dutch physicians residing there and by their recommend, alien It was soon employed in Europe. In process of time this medicine has come into general use, and is highly spoken of by the best medical writers. Physicians recommend it mostly for complaints of the urinary organs, such as gravel, a morbid irrita. lion of the bladder and urethra, retention of urine, also incontinence of urine from want of lone in the urinary organs, jit cools the unnatural heat and relieves pain ; antj in many cases of long standing it has been effectual when other valuable medicines had railed to produce an effect. The active princi ple of this medicine is a volatile oil which is mostly lost by the old process of boiling. Hence it requires great care and skilful management to prepare this medicine properly. FLUID EXTRACT OF BUCHU is a strong or concentrated preparation prepared by the new process called ‘ Displacement.” By this the valua ble properlies'of the Bucbu are entirely preserved, and this form' of the medicine is less liable to injury from age and more palatcable.
