rr^EAX^ER^C^TJj^OJv A “Capital Scholar” Skye. —One lit tie incident wo must mention as'- illustrating education by rote. -Walking to church one Sunday, in 'SKye. we were followed by a'sfip of-a lan some ten or eleven years bf’age, ..vvbp^.on.putting some questions to him, vol unteered to name all the capitals in Europe, which die did with marvelous dexterity.— Jropi bpVp'pe,_be crossed to South America, .S(W ratflecfoutihe names of the capitaiawith the accurancy of a calculating machine.- From : Smith’ America he off to Asia, -witd- finally brought up af/eddo in Japan.'— We were rathdr skeptical as. td the va|ge of acquirements—and, Jndeed, as lo The reality of any informations having been con veyed to the lad’s mind by tbie formidable muster roll of words that had been stuffed jrnro his mouth. We therefore asked him, ■“Can you (ell as the name of the island you live in !” But not withstanding his lore, he had not learned that he lived in the Isle of :Skyc; - '“To make quite sure of the fact we re .quested tne captain of the steamer to repeal the question in Gaelic, but there was no Skye forthcoming. He knew the name of the par .ish, and of 01l the capitals in the .world but not of the island he lived in. There being a ■ schoolmaster present accidental, we thought the occasion too good to be lost, to show the worthlessness; of word stuffing, and ventured ■ another question : “Now, my lad, you have told Us the names of nearly all the capitals in.the.world ; is a capital, man or beast?" It’s a beast,” said the boy, quite decisively. So mqch for words without understanding. In the.we*t school inspection, that boy will probably: pass for a prodigy, and will figure in statistical reported as an example of what ’good'education can do. —Glasgow Common wealth. - 'May a Schoolmaster Kiss a School mistress?—This question has been up for , decision in the town of Palmer, Mass. It seems that the principal of a leading.school undertook to kiss a female assistant. She, like all ladies that want to show a proper shy ness upon such occasions, and make folks think don’t like to be kissed, resist ed the gallant attack just long enough to make the victory more sweet, and to give foundation to the story that the whole thing was against her will. -The story of the trans action got out, and the straight-laced school committee'took it in hand. They declared that they could not stand it, and they fonh with expelled the feacher. The people of ihe town however, with enlarged views of Ihe fallibility of humqln nature, intend to keep the teacher employed at their own expense, and have peihioned for a general town meet ing to see whether the voters are unwilling that a school teacher shall continue tlo be a man. We await the result of the meeting with some little curiosity. English Synonyms. —Words which'are strictly synonymous, i. e., which convey pre | cisely the same idea, and may be substituted ; for each other in every possible connection, j are almost, if not entirely unknown. But the term synonyms is applied, in common usage, to, words which represent a given idea under ■different limitations or modifications, or ideas which are almost identical. Collections of words that express nearly the same idea are useful, especially to young writers, to enable them to select such words as best express their ideas. But if they use words as exact ly:syhonymous when they are not so, they will be apt to make serious if not ridiculous blunders. When the student is in doubt re specting the distinction between the significa tions of words called synonymous, he should consult a large Dictionaty, or some such work as Crabbes Synonyms, Readers. —Those who read may be divid ed into four-classes:—lst. Sponges, who,ap sbrh all they read, aud return it in nearly the same slate, only a very little dirtied. 2d. Sand Glasses—who retain nothing, and are content to gel through a book for the sake of getting through the lime. 3d. Strainbags— who retain merely the dregs of what they read.' -4th. Mogul Diamonds—eqally rare and valuable—who profit by what they read and enable others to profit by it also. . Overdoing the Thing. —The Mobile Mercury gives an amusing account of a ne gro baptismal scene in Mississippi, wherein a negro known as Big Will figured conspicu ously. Despite Will’s irreverence we publish the story: “The bottom of the creek was of slippery soap stone, which, just beyond the point where a sufficient depth was obtained lor a proper administration of the ordinance, broke suddenly off into a deep hole. Big Will at templed to do as directed, but like his race in matters of religion generally, overdid the thing; his feet slipped from under him, and down he went into the deep bole, dragging the minister along with him. The astonished crowd was horrified aslhev both.disappeared beneath the surface. For a few seconds bubbles rose to the surface to mark the spot where they went down, and then Big Will arose snorting and spouting water like a por poise. As Will regained the shelving rock and made towards dry land, the minister was discovered clinging to his leg with bull dog tenacity. As soon as Will’s speech returned to him he was heard to exclaim, “Gosh, Gor A’mighty, white folks some on you gjyine to lose a nigger wid dis d——d fool ishness !” A Hit at the Lawvebs.—Judge Jones, of —, Indiana, who never allows an op portunity for a joke to pass him, occupied the bench when it became necessary to obtain a juryman in a case in which L and B were employed as counsel. The former was an illiterate Hibernian, the latter decidedly German in his mode of expression. .The sheriff proceeded to look around the room in search of a person to- fill the vacant seat, when he espied a Dutch Jew and claimed him as his own. The Dutchman objected: “I can’t unsthand goof Engteese,” he re peated. “Take your seat,” cried the Judge, “take your seat; that’s no excuse t you’re not like ly. to hear any of it!’’ Under that decision be took histeat. BUCHU LEAVES are procured from the south ern part of Africa. The Hottentots at the cape of Good Hope have long used this article as a remedy in a variety of diseases. From them the medicine was borrowed by the English and Dutch physicians residing there and by their recommend ation it was soon employed in Europe. In process of time this medicine has come into general use, and is highly spoken of by the best medical writers. Physicians recommend it mostly for complaints of the urinary organs, such as gravel, a morbid irrita tion of the bladder, qpd arcthra/relehlion of urine, also incontinence of urine from want of tone in the urinary organs. It cools the unnatural heal and relieves pain; and in many cases of long standing il has been effectual when other valuable medicines had faded to produce art effect. The active princi ple of this medicine is a volatile oil which is mostly lost by the old process of boiling. Hence it requires great care arutskilful management to prepare this medicine properly;"• FLUID EXTRACT OF BUCHU is a strong or concentrated preparation prepared by the new process called* Displacement.” By this the valua ble properties of the Buchu arc entirely preserved, and this form of the medicine is less liable to injury from age and more paiateable.
