Trick of a Lover. One fine winter evening early-in the pres. ent century, Gulonel , and his maiden sister, Patty, were sitting onleach side of a delightful hickory fire, enjoyidg "otium cum dignitate.” without any interruption for at least an hour; and that, considering the sex of Miss Patty was very remarkable. The Colonel was silting’“cross-legged in a great arm chpiy with his spectacles orr, and his pipe in one hand and a newspaper in the other, fast asleep. Miss Patty was moving herself gently backward and forward in a low rocking chair. Close by her feet was thr eat, while Carlo was stretched out at full length.on the rug in front of the fire, and, like his master, fast asleep. At length the Colonel roused from nis nap, took off his spectacles and rubbed his eyes. Then glanc ing at a very large pile of papers that lay on the table near him, said: “t wish Henry was here to help me about my rents.” “Well, I really wish he was,” answered his sister. “I can’t expect him this month yet,” yawn ed the Colonel. “Hadn’t you belter send for him ?” said his sister. Upon this the dog got up and walked to ward the door. “Where are you going, Carlo ?” said the old gentleman. The dug looked in his master’s face wag ged his tail, but never said a word, and pur sued his way towards the door ; and as he could not well open it himself, Miss Patty got up and opened it for him. The Colonel seemed perfectly satisfied, and was compos ing himself for another nap, when the loud nnd cheerful barking of thejdog announced the approach of some one, and\ roused him from his lethargy. Presently the door was opened, and a young man gaily entered the room. “Why, William Henry, is that you ?” said Auni Pdliy. “Henry, my boy, I am' heartily glad to see you," said Ihe Colonel, gening entirely out of the chair, and giving his nephew a hearty shake of the hand. “Pray, what has brought you home so suddenly ?” “Oh, Ido not know,” said Henry. “Ft is rather dull in town, so 1 thought 1 would just step up and see how you all come on.” “Well I am glad to see you. Sit down,” said the Colonel. “So do," said his sister. “There, aunt, is a bottle of first-rate snuff Tor you ; and here, uncle, is one of capital Maraschino.” “Thank you, my boy,” said (he Colonel. “Positively it does my heart good to'see you in such fine spirits.” 1 “And mine loo,” said his sister. Henry, either anxious to help his uncle or himself, broke the seal from the lop of the ‘boltle of cordial, and drew the cork, while Patty got some glasses. ! ‘-Well, my boy,” said the Colonel, whose good homor increased every moment, “what is the news in B ■? Anything happened 1” “No—yes,’’ said Henry i “1 have gnt one of the best stories to tell you that you have ever heard in vour life.” “Come, lei’s have it,” said he filling his glass. “Well, you must know,” said Henry, (hat while [ was in town, I met wiih an old and particular friend of mine, about my own age. About two months ago he fell desper ately in love with a young girl and wants to marry her, but dares not without the consent of his uncle, a very fine old gentleman, as rich as Crcesus—do take a little more cor dial.” “Why don’t his uncle wish him to marry ?” inquired the Colonel. “Oh, yes,” resumed Henry. “But there’s the rub. He is very anxious that Bill should gel a wife, but he is terribly afraid that He’d be taken in ; for it is generally understood that he is to be the old gentleman’s heir.— And, as for his uncle, though very liberal in every thing elre, he suspects every lady who pays bis nephew the least attention of being a fortune hunter.” “The old scamp,” said the Colonel ; “why can’t he let the boy have his own way ?” “I think as much,” said Patty. “Well, how did he manage?” said the Colonel. \ “Why,” said Henry, “he was in a con founded pickle. 1 He was afraid to ask his uncle’s consent right out; he could not man- age to let him see the girl, for she lives at some distance. Bui he knew that his uncle enjoyed a good joke, and was an enthusiastic admirer of beauty. So, what does he do but go and gel’her miniature taken, for she was extremely beautiful, besiees being intelligent and accomplished.” “Beautiful! intelligent! accomplished!’ exclaimed the Colonel ; “pray, what objeC' lion could the fool have to her ?” “Why, she is not worth a cent,” said Henry. “Fudge-fT said the Colonel; “I wish I had been in the old chap’s place ; how did he get along?” _ ■ “Why, as I said, he bad a picture taken, and as it was about the time for collecting rents, he thought it would make the old man good natured if ha went home jmd offered to assist him ; and so, answering all inquiries, he took the miniature out of his pocket, hand ed it to his uncle, and askedi him how he liked it—telling him that a particular friend lent it to him. The old man was in an ec stacy of delight, and declared he would give the world to see a woman as handsome as that, and that Bill might have her. 1 ’ “Ha !” shouted the Colonel, “the old chap was well como up with. The best joke I ever heard; but was she really beautiful ?” “The most angelic creature I ever saw,” said'Henry—“but you can judge for your self. He lent me the picture, and knowing your taste that way; I brought it for you to look at.” Here Henry look it out of his pocket and ha tided it to his uncle, at the same lime fill i-. j h t glass. Aunt Polly got out of her M>tnt Oj took at the picture. «w," said »he, “that is a beauty.” 1 /o. ii.jy say ihat, sister,” said the ‘ j' vV “ ( 'loot wish I had been .0 B ■ s I” 1 ”-* ka Is ) w Jjy did you (ii- '<w it f JKiif y7 The mosf s/t , cf<.i is.d g (1 I j would " give a thousand 'dollars ; fof such tf niece!” “Would you inquired Henry, patting, the dog. “Yes, that I wouldj'’.rep[ied s the.CQlonel, “and nine thousand more on the top ofit nnd that makes ten thousand; shoot me if 1 would not.” “Then PI I, introduce you to her 10-mor row, ’’ said Henry. 5 As there was a wedding at the house of the worthy Colonel the ensuing week’, and as the old gentleman was highly pleased with the beautiful and accomplished bride, it is reasonable to suppose that Henry did not for get bis promise.' , ' BUSINESS UmECTOM. _ ©* W Hydropathic Physician and Surgeon, CLKLA]\D, TIOGA COUNTY, PA. From them the medicine was borrowed by the English and Dutch physicians residing there and by their recommend alion it was soon employed in Europe. In process of time this medicine has come into general use, and is highly spoken of by the best medical writers. Physicians recommend it mostly for complaints of the urinary organs, each as gravel, a morbid irrita tion of the bladder and urethra, retention of urine, also incontinence of nrine from want of tone in the urinary organs. It cools the unnatural heat and relieves pain; and in many cases of long standing it has been effectual when other valuable medicines had failed to produce an effect. The active princi ple of this medicine is a volatile oil which is mostly lost by the old process of boiling. Hence it requires great care and skilful management to prepare this medicine properly.
