. Codids't Subscribe.— A. pair of those interesting, entertaining ladies, who of late seem to carry on so large a business in our dnwn-iown offices and stores in fhe way of procuring subscriptions for new wotbs, sbll ing engravings of “The Father of his coun try,” and other notabilities, and who ('ho la dies) are so fascinating in manner, so delight fully importunate, so sweetly un-gel-rid-of able, called a morning or two since at the of lice of a young lawyer, to induce him, as the younger of the two expressed it, with a charming smile, “To subscribe to a most ele gam work just published, to be got up in ele gant style, with illustrations, &c. “Indeed ladies,” said our friend, “I can not ; I have no doubt of the excellence of your work, but I am not in want of anything of that kind. In fact, Ido not feel able at present to subscribe for any new works of any description. The partnership of which 1 am a member, has lately been so prudent as to issue a new work of their own, and the enormous expense attending its issue, not to speakoflhe illustrations, embellishments) and ornamental adornings with which they have Wen til to clothe the production—such un- Wonled outlay has really, for the present— in fact—crippled me—sorry —but a fact — every word of it.”' “But—ah,” interposed our enterprising agentees, “perhaps we could procure you some subscribers for your work ; our terms are quite reasonable. What do yVm call your work, sirT’ “Well, we have not fully determined as yet, but I guess I shall let Mts. S have her own way, and call it after myself— Charles Henry.” The ladies concluded they had an engage ment in the next block.” i Protestant Sebvices at Rome. — l! is said that for a year or two Mr. Cass, our minister at Rome, has had Protestant service .at the consulate. Mr. Chandler, the new ap pointee, being a Catholic, terminates of course the Protestant worship. “In the great hall of the Vatican,” says a cotemporary, “the visitor will see two flags—the Pope’s flag and the flag of the United Stales—cosily standing side by side. If the visitor is curious to know what relations these two flags bear to each other, or what business our flag has in such a place, he will be politely told that in the days of the lale revolution, when ihe ex cited masses cared li.llle for the person of the Pontiff, or the noble buildings at Rome, when the Vatican itself was in peril, that same flag, waving from the summit, had power enough Ip save the pile, and while Mr. Cass remains at Rome ihe services he rendered must be acknowledged. But in his successor one is sought who will not claim nor desire Protest ant services in the City of the Seven Hills. There are many woman like those spoken of by Jean Paul, who\ibandon their opinion the moment their husbands adopt it. Even in church, he says, the woman sing an oc tave higher than the men, in order not to agree with them in anything. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS Trlal List, September Term, 1858. Physicians recommend it mostly for complaints of the urinary organs, socb as gravel, a morbid Irrita. tion of the bladder and urethra, retention of urine, also incontinence of urine from want of tone in the urinary organs. It cools the unnalurol heat and relieves pain ; and in many cases of long standing it has been effectual when other valuable medicines had failed to produce an effect.
