Rev. Peter Cartwright at the Aster House, Some church affairs made il necessary for Mr. Cartwright to visit New York City some years ago, and it was arranged for him that he should put up at the Aslor house, ft was here that nis brethern expected to meet him; his social and denominational appointment had reference to the Astor House as his head quarters: When Mr. Cartwright, however, appeared at the Astor there was nothing in his backwoods appearance'that suggested to its proprietors his worthy position among the fathers of Methodism; when, therefore, he requested to be shown to his room he was very cavalierly turned over to a servant to show him up stairs. Up stairs they went —up, up, up—Mr. Cartwright in wondering amazement lost, the servant apparently un tiring in his amusement of ascending. Fi nally the servant opened the door of an apart ment up in the attic story, pointed it out to Mr. C., as his roam. Father Peter detained the servant while he should lake a general .survey of the premises—repeated the inquiry if this was the room he was to 'occupy—and at length, appeared to be well satisfied, he disposed of his baggage, and very politely requested the servant to be good enough to show him down stairs again. The servant preceded Father Cartwright, down, down, down, till they reached at length the street landing; but before the servant could make his escape, Peter inquird if he wouldn’t show him up stairs > So up they went again, hea venward, and at last Peter found his room, and permitted the servant to depart in peace. The servant however, had little more than found himself down stairs, when Uncle Peter rang the bell vigorously. In due lime, up came the'servant, by this time panting with unusual exertion. '•My good friend lam sorry to trouble you, but 1 should be see the clerk, if you will be kind enough to send him to my room.’’ j “Oh certainly.” And sq down, down, goes the servant to say to the clerk that a singular old chap up in ihe up'per story wanted him to come to his room. And then up, up goes Mr. Clerk. “Are you the Clerk ?” “Yes sir.” “Well, you will place me under great ob ligations to you, ifyou will show me the way down slairs !” And when once more down stairs, after Uncle Peter had taken another careful sur vey of ihe surrounding, the clerk very po litely inquired if there was anything further he could do for him, “Yes,” says Uncle Peter, “yes, my friend I would be greatly obliged to you for a btoad axe !” “A broad-axe !” says Mr. Clerk in aston ishment, “and what do you propose to do with a broad-axe V’ “I thought I should like to Maze my way to my room /” It is needless to sav that Peter Cartwright was the lion of that week at the Aster ; and that it was not further required] (of him to climb up that endless series of Stairways— but, when his friends called againuo enquire for, or call upon him, they found him snugly ensconced-in one of the most eligible rooms in the bouse. A Good Story is told of nn old lady who had received a letter from her son on board of a merchantman. It ran thus: “Have been driven into the bay of Fun day, by a pampoose right into the teeth. It blew great guns and carried, away the bow. sprit; a heavy sea washed overboard the bin nacle and companion ; the captain lost his quadrant and couldn’t lake an observation for fifteen days; at last we arrived at Hali fax.” The old woman who could not read her self, got a neighbor to repeat it to her three or four limes, until she thought she had it by heart. She then sallied out to tell the story. “Oh my poor sou 1” “Why, what’s the matter, mother 1 I hope no mischief.’’ “No, thank God, he’s safe! But he has' been driven into the bay of Firmament by a bamboozel right into the teeth, it blowed great guns, and they carried the pulpit—a heavy sea washed overboard the pinnacle of the tabernacle, the captain lost his conjuration, and couldn’t get any salvation for fifteen days —at Inst they arrived at Hallelujah!’’ \ “La, bless me ! what a wonder they wasn’t beat to atoms. Well, I wouldn’t like to be a sailor!’’ Loafers in a Printing Office. —The composing room of a printing office is not the place to tell long stories, or argue points in metaphysics. —Read ye loungers and be advised. A printing office is like a school ; it can have no interlopers, hangers-on, or twaddlers, without a serious inconvenience, to say noth ing of loss of time, which is just as good as gold to (he printer—as though it mstallicly glistened in his hand. What should be tho’t of a man who would enter a school and twaddle first with the teacher and then with the scholars—interrupting the discipline of one and the studies of the others ? And yet this is the precise effect of the loafers with the course of business—distracts the great attention which is necessary to the good prin ter.—No gentleman will ever eater it and presume to act the loafer. He wijl feel above it, for no real man ever sacrifices t|ie interests of or interferes with the duties of others. The loafer does both. Let him think, if he never has, that the last place he should ever insinuate his worthless and unwelcomed pres ence is in (he printing office.—.. Printers’ News Letter. “Doctah, pway, how long can a man live without bwains V asked a Chicago exquisite or a physician, who had been commenting on the case of an idiot who had recently died. “Couldn’t say exactly,” was the doctor’s reply, “but if you tell me your age I can make a rough guess.’* An old offender was lately brought before a learned Justice of the Peace. The Consta ble, as a preliminary informed his worship that be had in custody John Simmons, alias Jones, alias Smith. “Very well," said the Magistrate, "1 will try the two women first; bring in Alls Jones." From them the medicine was borrowed by the English and Dutch physicians residing there and by their recommend ation it was soon employed in Europe. In process of time this medicine has come into general use, and is highly spoken ofby the best medical writers. Physicians recommend it mostly for complaints of the urinary organs, such as gravel, a morbid irrita tion of the bladder and urethra, retention of urine, also incontinence of urine from want of tone in the urinary organs. It cools the unnatural heat and relieves pain ; and in many coses of long standing it has been effectual when other valuable medicines had failed to produce an effect. The active princi ple of this medicine is a volatile oil which is mostly lost by the old process of boiling. Hence it requires great care and skilful management to prepare this medicine properly. F, May 5, 1857, The patentee of this Fence, after numerous trials and experiments, has finally succeeded in perfecting a plan for the construction of Fence, which does away with the necessity df inserting posts in the ground. The above Fenccjis made to.sel upon the na'ural face of the earth, and by its peculiar forma tion will conform to the uridulalions of the ground. The mechanical mode of its construction convinces all who examine it of its superiority over anything of the kind ever offered to;the public, as well as of its durability, simplicity and chhapness. It ia so put together that it is secured by means of keys, which are easily adjusted* and battens by which it is kept strained to the ground , so that no trouble need be apprehended from! winds. This fence can be built of lumber at $lO per thousand, for the sum of 50 cents per rod—making it by far the cheapest fence that can be made; and the ease with which it can be put op and taken down, moved, made into stack pens, or used temporarily for any purpose the require it—no less than the fact that at each an opening can be made, thus obviating the necessity for bars or gates —must render it a universal favorite with the form ing class of community.
