A French Trick. We find this in a French correspondent’s letter to n Southern journal: “My dear,” asked a yoiing Paris lady to a female friend, “do you believe that miserly X. would lend me three thousand francs I” X. was the name of a well known sporting man. “(t depends on chance,” was the answer. “How shall 1 set about it!” “Take a pen and write: “My dear Alfred—l have been disappoint ed -in the non-receipt of some money this morning.' Could you bring me this evening three thousand francs, and at the same lime curve a pheasant 1 have just received?” “And d>i you believe,” said she, when the letter was seut, “that I shell have my mon «y?” l “With that note, my dear you’ll not get a sou.” “Why did you make me write it?" “Because it was necessary that a first note should precede a second—do you understand me ?” ••No.” “Take your pen.” “VV’ha', write again ?” “Three lines only.” “My dear Alfred—Think of my note as not sent. Just after I had\despatched it, I received my money. Don’t forget however, to come and sup with me. The pheasant is superb.” This letter was sent like the first. “Now see what will happen,” said the la dy friend. “Alfred will feign not to have received your second letter, and will make a show of generosity when he thinks you need no mon ey. The rest is with yourself.” AH was executed according to form, the sporting man gallantly o flu red the three thou sand francs convinced they would not be ac cepted ; but to his horror the lady quie'ly pocketed the money. And to add to his amusement the mischief a pheasant was there to eat! Webster’s Reports. —One evening not many years ago, while the Supreme Court “wns holding i»s session in Somerset county, down in the Stale of Maine, some of the le gal brethren were warming their legs before a blazing fire in a rural tavern, and convers ing upon various matters pertaining to the profession. B. J. Bacon, whose long silence indicated that his mind was in travail with some great thought, broke out by asking if any of hts brethren could relieve him from his trouble. “I wish,*’ said he lo commence an action against a boy who was caught stealing ap ples. I find no case of the kind in any ol bur Reports, and 1 am at a loss for a prece ded The landlord overheard the question, and informed <he verdant lh *l he knew a case just in point. “Ah ! M said Bacon, “in whose reports shall ] find it ?” “In Webster’s,”said the landlord, gravely. “Webster’s Reports 7 Well, now you speak of it, I think I do remember something like it there. Do you know the volume?” “Yes, I do; I have a copy in the house if you would like to see it.” “I would be greatly obliged to you for it, as 1 have left mine at home.*’ The landlord stepped out, and soon re turned with Webster’s Spelling Book ! and turning to the story. “An old man found a rude boy on one of his trees stealing apples.” the book to his legal friend, who ~ threw it into the fire, in the midst of roars of laughter, and speedily made his disappear ance. The position of the heart is supposed to be toleiftbly well understood, and yet there is a difference of opinion about the matter. The tragic actor who as he rolls the “r” with the rattle of a horse-fiddle, exclaims, “this hea r-r t,” and simultaneously clasps his right hand on his (eft bieast, is understood to hive hit it. But perhaps he Is mistaken. We saw an actor the other evening, who, in ‘sui: ing the action to the word,’ indicated an en tirely different locality for that important organ. The scene was something like this ; Actor, (romantically)—“The angel! I have her picture here—l always wear it next my heart!” And here he produced the precious daguerreotype, not from his bosom, but from a pocket in the tail of his coat. A first rale joke took place quite lately, iff our court room. A woman was testifying tn behalf of her son, and swore “that he had' worked on a farm ever since ho was born.” The lawyer, who cross examined her, said “You said that your son has worked on a farm ever since he was born ?” “I do.” “What die he do the first year?” “He milked ” The lawyer evaporated. —Hartford Cour ant. From them the medicine was borrowed by the English and Dutch physicians residing there and by their recommend ation it was soon employed in Europe. In piocess of lime this medicine has come into general use, and is highly spoken of by the best medical writers. Physicians recommend it mostly for complaints of the urinary organs, such as gravel, a morbid irrita tion of the bladder and urethra, retention of urine, also incontinence of nrine from want of lone in the urinary organs. It cools (he unnatural heat and relieves pain; and in many cases of long standing it has been effectual when other valuable medicines had failed to produce an effect. The active princi ple of this medicine is a volatile oil which is mostly lost by the old process of boiling. Hence it requires great care and skilful management to prepare this medicine properly. FLUID EXTRACT OF BUCHU is a strong or concentrated preparation prepared by the new process called 4 Displacement.” By this the valua fale properties of the Buchu arc entirely preserved, and this form of the medicine is less liable to injury from age and more pulateable.
