Report of the Committee appointed to superintend
the Burning of the Iron Safes, at Reading, Feb.
27,1857.
“The undersigned, members of the committee, do
respectfully report, that we saw the two Safes origi
nally agreed upon by Farrels Sc Herring and Evans
Sc Watson, placed side by side in a furnace, viz:
The Safe in use by the Paymaster of the Philadel
phia and Reading Railroad Company, in his office
at Reading, manufactured by Farrels Sc Herring,
and the safe in use by H. A. Lantz, in his store,
manufactured by Evans AAVatsoDjand pat in books
and papers precisely alike?; i
The fire was. started at o’clock, A. M-, and
kept up until four cords of green hickory, two cords
dry oak and half chestnut lop wood were entirely
consumed, the whole under the jsuperintendencc of
the subscribers, members of the Committee. The
Safes were then cooled off with! water, after which
they were opened and the books and papers taken
out by the Committee and sent to H. A. Lantz’s
store for public examination, after they were first
examined and marked by the Committee, The
books and papers taken from Safe mannfactored
by Evans & Watson were bat slightly affected by
the intense heat, while those taken from (he Safe
manufactured by Farrels Sc Herring, were in our
judgment, damaged fully fifteen per cent more than
those taken from Evans Sc Watson’s Safe.
We believe the above to havef been a fair and im.
partial trial of the respective qualities of bath Safes.
JACOB H. DYSHER,
Daniel s. hunter.
Having been absent during the burning, we fully
coincide with tire above statement of the condition
of (he papers and books taken out pf their respective
Safes. G. A. NICHOLLS,
H. H. MUHLENBERG,
JAMES MILHOLLAND,
EVANS Sc WATSON have, now on hand 300,-

have purchased Safes from Evans & Watson since
the horning up to May Ist, 1657.
