Wit of Douglass Jeer old. — In one of Douglass Jerrold’s plays,an old sailor, trying 10 snatch a kiasfrom a pretty girl, got a box on the ear. “There,” exclaimed he, “Uke my luck; always get wrecked on coral reefs !” The manager not being able to see the joke, it was cut out by the author. The following saying was likewise sacri ficed by Jerrold, on account of a captious re mark by a friend to whom the manuscript waa read. A cynic, wrangling with his bet ter half, in one of his comedies, was repre sented as saying to her: “My notion of a wife of forty is, that a man should exchange her, like a bank note for two twenties I l ' To Clean Silk.—Pare and slice thin three washed Irish potatoes. Truth is Mighty and must Prevail. Report of the Committee appointed to superintend the Burning of the Iron Safes, at Reading, Feb. 27,1857. “The undersigned, members of the committee, do respectfully report, that we saw the two Safes origi nally agreed upon by Farrels Sc Herring and Evans Sc Watson, placed side by side in a furnace, viz: The Safe in use by the Paymaster of the Philadel phia and Reading Railroad Company, in his office at Reading, manufactured by Farrels Sc Herring, and the safe in use by H. A. Lantz, in his store, manufactured by Evans AAVatsoDjand pat in books and papers precisely alike?; i The fire was. started at o’clock, A. M-, and kept up until four cords of green hickory, two cords dry oak and half chestnut lop wood were entirely consumed, the whole under the jsuperintendencc of the subscribers, members of the Committee. The Safes were then cooled off with! water, after which they were opened and the books and papers taken out by the Committee and sent to H. A. Lantz’s store for public examination, after they were first examined and marked by the Committee, The books and papers taken from Safe mannfactored by Evans & Watson were bat slightly affected by the intense heat, while those taken from (he Safe manufactured by Farrels Sc Herring, were in our judgment, damaged fully fifteen per cent more than those taken from Evans Sc Watson’s Safe.
