Herring and Evans <fc Watson, placed side by side in a (arnnee, via: The Sale in use fay the Paymaster of the Philadel. phla and Reading Railroad Company, in Ills office at Reading, manufactured by parrel? &. Herring, nud the safe in use by H. A. Lanlz, in his store, manufactured by EvansaSe Watson, and pntinboohs and |»pcrs precisely alike. The fire was started at 8J o’clock, A. M., and kept up until four cords of green hickory, two cords dry 'oak and half chestnut lop .wood were entirely consumed, the whole under the superintendence of the subscribers, members of tbe Committee. The Safes were then cooled off with watcr, after Which they were opened and the books tmd papers taken out by the Committee and sent to H. A. Tania’s store for public examination, after they were first examined and marked by the Committee, Ihe book" and papers laken from the Safe manufactured by Evans & Watson were but slightly affected'by the intense heat, while those taken from the Safe manufactured by parrels & Herring, were in our judgment, damaged fully fifteen per cent more than those taken from Evans &. Watson’s Safe. We believe the above to have been a fair and im partial trial of tbe respective qualities of both Safes. JACOB H. DYSHER, DANIELS.
