y; stim Some of the Games of Female Debll- Itles. Tho hours in which the great majority of American mothers and housekeepers are fret from aire, and can go forth to breathe the pure air or join in social amusements, os t« so common in other nations, come few and Ur betwedd. To ibis.add all tha. mischiof done by impure air, improper food and neg* led of the-skin, which they share equally with the ifiher sex. But, Worstof all, add to those disadvantages the peftticious custom of dress, i>y' which one-half the body is sub*' p-cted to extreme changes front' heat to cold, while tho other portion is compressed by tight girding, heated by accumulated garments, pressed downward by whalebones, and by heavy skins resting over the roost delicate nruans. into our rural towns, even, these per nicious customs of dress have been carried hv mantua makers from the city, and still more by the miserable fashion plates, in our b’ermure, that set forth the distortions of de formity and disease as models of taste and fish ion. In our country towns,.and among (tin industrial classes, it will be found that the taxation of care and labor on the brain of women is even worse and greater than it is In the same class of our cities. The wives of ricli farmers are often ambitious (o carry out plans of labor and wealth with their husbands, while their daughters must be sent to boarding school, and all the habits and tastes of city life must, in consequence, tie mingled with other cares. The greatyna jorily of the American women have their brain -end nervous system exhausted by too much care and 100 much mental excitement in their daily duties; while another class, who live to be waited on and amused, areas great sufferers for want of some worthy ob ject in hfo, or from excess in seeking amuse ment. Next, there never has been any pre vious generation of children who have been so extensively deprived of pure, coot air in nursery, school-room, and parlor as those now on the stage. The air light stoves in bedrooms, the cooking stoves in kitchens, the close stoves in school-rooms, and the far greater care taken In make windows and doors tight, have secured this result. Then l the furnaces that are so generally used, keep tea atmosphere of a bouse far warmer than it ever becomes with open fires. For, when, tbs body is warmed by radiated heat from a tirr, the air never become*so heated as when at: warrn-h is to be gained from the surrqjjp ding atmo-phere. And as the upper part of the room is always warmest, both stoves and lurnaces keep the head warmer than the feet, and, furnish to the lungs only a heated at mosphere to breathe. In former days little girls took cold air baths all over their person whenever they went out. In these days, they are covered from all cool air, and they •land over registers and take hot air baths when they feel a chill or have cold fee I, Besides this, the school-rooms are made tight er and heated holler than they ever could be n former days. At the same lime they are crowded with occupants whose brains, while struggling with bad air, are stimulated with intellectual drills and cxciiing'motives to ex ertion, such as never were known to a for mer generation. Little girls are especial sufferers in all that appertains to health.— They must be housed most of the lime in heated and impure air, and then when al lowed to go abroad, they must wear thin slippers, and must not romp and run like the boys. And then, as they come to the most trying and critical period of life, the stimula tion of brain increases, the exercise dimin ishes, and the monstrous fashions that bring distortion and disease are assumed, -in Eng land, the higher classes rarely send a daught er to a boarding school, but parents secure teachers to educate them at home, and take the greatest pains to secure a healthy and perfect physical developement. Twenty years ago, a distinguished med teal man gave it as his opinion that a major ity of »choob~gtds had more or leas of the curvature oTtho dpine. A still more terrific is now added as the re sult of our miserable neglect and abuse of the younp Age.— But few men die of age. Almost all die' of disappointment, passional, mental, or bodily toil, or accident. The passions kill men sometimes, even suddenly. The common expression, choked with passion, has little ex aggeration in i> ; for even though not sudden ly fatal, strong passions shorten life. Strong bodied men often die young—weak men live longer than the strong, far the strong use their strength, and the weak have none to use. The latter lake care of themselves ; the for mer do not. As it is with the body, so it is with (he mind and .temper. The strong ere apt to break, or, like the candle, to run ; the weak burn out. The inferioranimals, which live, in general, temperate lives, have gene rally their prescribed term of years. The horse lives twenty-five years ; the ox fifteen or twenty ; the lion about twenty ; ]be dog ten or twelve ; the rabbit eight j the guinea pig six or seven. Those numbers ell bear a similar proportion to the lime the animal lakes to grow to its full size. But man of all the animals, is the one that seldom comes up to his average. He ought to' live a hundred yean, according to the physiological law, for five limes twenty are one hundred; but in stead of that be scarcely reaches, on the average four times his growing period; the cat six limes ; and the rabbit seven or eight times the standard of the measurement. The reason is obvious—man is not only the most irregular, and the most intemperate, but the most laborious and hard worked of all ani mals. He is also the most irritable of all animals; and there is reason to believe, though, wo cannot tell what an animal se cretely feels, that more than any other ani mal man cherishes wrath to keep it Warm, and consumes himself with the fire of his own secret reflections. Remember that an impious or profane I bought, uttered by a parent’s lips may oper ate 90 the young heart like a careless spray of water thrown upon polished steel, staining 'i with rust which no after scouring can •dace. A resident of Kansas, furnishes a Chicago paper his opinion of tho probableicharapler of that territory. “The soil and climate are highly praised. Coal,' lime and sahd-stone areabundant. Corn, wheat, oats, rye, hemp, sweet and Irish potatoes can be produced os if they were indigenous of the climate, while cotton would not be an unprofitable crop in southern portions. Fruit is brought to per fection in the adjoining counties of Missouri. But, above all, he says Kansas is destined to become pre-eminently a stock-growing State. The climate and soil arc well adapted to horned cattle, horses, sheep and swine.” "Class in middle-aged geography; stand up. What is a pyramid 1" "A pile of me n in a circus, one a-lop of the other." We do not believe in political preachers, -Qut we think that a clergyman in Warwick made„a happy turd last Sunday, when he said ‘‘My brethren, I wish you to vole just as you pray.
