Anna Maria has got a j dp 8 P e r a l°/ am ® side, and f don’t purlend to put her lo doing anything. She’s so feeble; and S,usnn So phia has a dreadful weak stomach; she can’t eat any thing unless it |s cookedd just so— she don’t even make her own bed.; and as for Amelia Angeline, she’s troubled with a terri ble palpitation of the heart; she can’t lift half a pail of water. Why don’t you gel an Irish girl?" Here Mrs. Hardpnn paused for breath, and Mr. Jones bade her a good morning, and re newed his journey; and just at night suc ceeded in gelling a married woman, who brought her baby with her, to come nod do a little baking, and stay a day or two till he could make a further trial. This, dear reader, is no fancy sketch. And noW let us for a moment look at the feebleness of Mrs. Hardpan’s daughters. An na Maria is lough enough to live in a dress which compresses her ribs from four to six inches, and leaves for both lungs about as much room as one ought to occupy I Of course she could not do housework, Susan Sophia cAn stand it to dance till midnight, then read novels till day-light, sleep till eleven o’- clock in the morning, eat hot cakes, and drink strong coffee for breakfast; beef soups, but ter, gravies, mince pies, and fruit puddings for dinner, pound cake, lemon tarts, and half a dozen dupa of green lea for supper; with doves, chalk, charcoal, ana slate pencils for a dessert.- Poor weak stomach! Amelia Angelina is a pale, slim, delicate creature, yet she "can stand it” with her breast bone pres sed upon her heart by a tight dress, so that it can scarcely beat! No wonder it is at times obliged to make a "terrible" effort to free it self of its surplus blood. Amelia Angelino too, is strong enough to carry six or eight pounds of cotton batting, and a small "cut of cloth” about her hips, wear thin shoes, and goto “ barearmed” in winter. What a Won der (hat she should have palpitation of the heart!” Now is it any wonder (hat yotmg ladies, managed in this way, are not able and wil ling to do housework 1 Their dress, manner of living, habits of thinking, all have a direct tendency to engender and confirm disease, Hence spinal complaint, dyspepsia, heart disease, consumption, etc., are the legitimate results. If we would have our daughters healthy, let us see that these, and kindred evils, are corrected. Let them lay aside the strait jacket and adopt a dress which allows the free motion of every joint and muscle, and the full expansion of the client; exchange their novels for histories, biography, poetry etc., take at least half an hours exercise in the open.air daily, during pleasant weather retire and rise early ; exchange (he hot cakes and coffee for cool bread and pure water; eat no rich dinners and late suppers; open the blinds, and let the sunlight shine in upon them, if you would not havo them look like plant* which grew in the cellar; lake them into (be kitchen, and instruct them.in the va rious branches of housewifery; do not.be afraid of soiling their hands—they are much easily cleansed than their hearts. And knowing how to perform the domestic duties of the household only helps to make the true lady-, nor will it lower (hem in (he estimation of any man whose respect is worth securing. Washing, baking, sweeping need not pre vent your daughters from becoming expert musicians, finished, painters, profound math ematicians or good wives. Woman’s Rights. The indefatigable co- workers in Ibis cause have been before the Assembly Committee again this session, with a strong and over whelming petition for a recognizance of, and action! upon the question of Woman’s Rights, The remarks made before that Committee were worthy the best head of the Legislature, and the earnest, and honest consideration of the Assembled Legislators. Tliere is one thing clear—if women have any rights which they can conclusively make appear, from their constitution, and social relations, ns intelligent, accountable beings to govern ment and its Idws, that belong to them, and' which they do not now enjoy, why our leg islators can do no less—and do honorably and justly—-than to grant them. If ill ad vised laws bring misery, and unhappiness up on her as well as. man, and good ooes .dis pense, to' her the same blessing of-pence, contentment and.ljberty as to man; and the infringement of any law brings upon her the same penalty attached to. the transgression by rnan, and obedience the same fruits of prosperity, and .quietude.—if she suffer and enjoy from the same causes which , men suf fers end enjoys from; if right—political and moral—be with her equally a right, and wrong equally a wrong with mao; and if ■he be.equally as capable of judging, of rea soning. and feeling on all these., points, with man, why are not her rights, moral, social, and political equal, and the same with (hose of man I We think,—and so does every man who thinks above his prejudices,—that is. gf it|o I m mm**' | Si obligation thanman—sh'eta more"%eitatii rpHE subscribers are now opening their ! ,lo be righ(_,,a,tirf act right upon pll puesrioiis jJL ’?£»Sltj'oP‘BpHilg3|std£ *{3*®* or momentiiuCmoiai'iro^HAMftu» my- f P™«»riu ed by his seirMh from U« high ground of a rational coiwcienUdus cmytclion. While they were now walking together; and the. professor was seeking to lead the conversation to grave subjects, they saw n pair of old Shoes lying in their path, • which they supposed to belong to a poor man who wasat work in the field and who had nearly finished his day’s.work. Tho young student turned tq the professor, saying, “let us play the man a trick; we will hide his shoes and conceal ourselves be hind those bushes, and watch to see his per : plcxity when he cannot find them.” “My dear friend," answered the professor, “wo must'never amuse ourselves at the ex pense of the poor. But you are rich, and you may give yourself a -much g’reator pleasure by means of this poor man. . Put a dollar in each shoo, and then we will hide our selves.” The student did so, and then placed him self, with the professor, behind the bushes close by, through which they could easily watch the laborer, and see whatever wonder and joy be might express. The poor man had soon finished his work, and came across the field to the path where he bad left-the coat and shoes. While he put on his coat, he slipped one fool into one of his shoes ; but feeling something hard, he stooped do#n 'and found the dollar. Aston ishment and wonder were seen upon his coun tenance; he gazed upon tho dollar, turned it round and looked at it again; then be looked round him on ail sides, but could see no one. Now he' put the money ip his pocket, and proceeded to put $n the other shoe ; but how jreat was his astonishment when ha found another! His feelings overcame him and ho fell upon his knees, looking up to heaven, and uttered a loud and fervent thanksgiving in which he spoke of his wife, nioti omj helpless, and his children without bread, whom this imely bounty from some unknown hand would save from perishing. The young man stood there deeply affec ted, and (ears filled his eyes. "Now,” said the professor, “are you not much better pleased than if you had placed your intended trick.” “O, dearest Sir,” answered the youth “you have taught me a lesson now that I will nev er forgot. I feel now the truth of the words which I never before understood, “it is bet ter to give than to receive.” VVe should never approach the poor but with the wish to do them good. ' BUSINESS DIRECTORY.
